Stammering in 6 yo ds

My ds has previously had periods of time when he stammered. Around the age of 3 he was referred to SALT and they had no concerns after the initial assessment so was not seen again.

He started stammering again a few weeks ago and it seems to be getting more frequent. I'm hoping it might just stop, given time, as it did before. What concerns me though is that as he is older he might need some speech therapy.

I mentioned it to his teacher at parents evening who didn't seem overly concerned. I don't think he does it as much at school as its worse in the evening when he's tired.

I'd rather get a referral underway earlier rather than later as I'm assuming there'll be a bit of a wait. So who do I need to speak to about it, gp, hv, school? Or should I just give it time, he doesn't seem to be bothered by it at the moment.

I would contact your local speech & language therapy department, google it & self-refer.

It's better to have the therapy ASAP IMO. Not all children grow out of it, and therapy is sometimes needed, better to be cautious.
