Blinking......habit or problem ??

I have noticed that Ds (3.5) has started doing like hard blinks every now and again, mostly once but sometimes twice. Not sure how many times in a day he is doing it but it's become quite noticable to me.

I think it is probably a habit but just wondered if anyone else's child does this.

ah ha! I used to do this.. in fact, I still do sometimes.

my eyes get really dry and sore and only a good hard blink makes it feel better!
saw gp and consultant at hospital who could only come up with a theory of it being an allergy of some sort, but don't know what!

anyway, I have eye drops a lot which helps... so it may be worth taking him to the doctor just to get it checked

I do it Blush.

Have done since i was about 5. Have never known why, it seems to be worse when i'm watching tv or very tired. ( i don't know i'm doing it, rely on others to tell me).

I spoke to an optician about it and she had no explanation, and she didn't notice me do it the whole time she tested my eyes.

People think i'm silly - but i honestly remember my swimming instructor doing it and am convinced i copied him and a habit has stuck.

I would advise not making a fuss as i used to find it really embarrasing.

I do know of children who go through phases of having 'tics' that don't last. I knew a boy who shook his head as a tic, he did it for a few months and then it stopped with no explanation. Hopefully this will be the case for your ds!

Thats interesting starlover, i've always felt mine are the opposite - eyes too wet and have to blink harder to stop tears rolling out!

Nice to know theres a fellow blinker out there Grin

Ahh right, hadn't thought of that one. Will keep a check on it. Am trying to figure out if he does it at a particular time and all i can see is that it seems to be after he has spoken alot of the time.

I can actually feel myself doing it now because i have 'spoken' about it!

The same goes if someone points out that i'm doing it - then i feel like i can't stop.

I think it might be like you describe Hattie, it's a habit he has picked up.

I won't mention it to him and see how it goes.

Yes i'm really not sure whats the best thing to do to prevent it becoming permanent like mine.

I think you are right to not mention it to him. Perhaps you could visit an optician with him and ask their advice. There must be some opticians out there who know about such things.

DS does this all the time. I'm afraid he gets it from his daddy, because he copies everything DH does, and has just gotten used to doing it. DH always does it a lot when really stressed, which he has been for the last couple months. No idea how to stop it, though. . .

So i could be right that i 'caught' it from the swimming instructor!!

How strange, that we can pick things up like that. I may have to go googling now.
