Nappy rash - getting worse? Help

12 week old started with tiny rash and within a matter of days it has got much worse, I have been extra careful cleaning well with baby wipes and using sudacream and trying to leave the area to dry for a 5-10mins before fastening the nappy but its not working still getting worse. Is there anything else I can do. I am bathing every other day at the moment.

Baby wipes can actually make things worse. Try just plain water and pure cotton wool (not the stuff mixed with acrylic).

I can also highly recommend metanium. It's a miracle cream

Agree with previous poster, wipes made my DD have nappy rash. I also tried sudocream but the rash just spread, the only thing that worked was metanium.

I can recommend metanium as well, our dd's nursery recommend rotating different creams for bad nappy rash as well so we have bepanthenan too. If its really bad, get it seen by a GP... We had to do this once when her bum was really bad and the GP said her rash was infected and gave us a cream on prescription which cleared it up practically overnight. I don't know if wipes make it worse but they do seem to sting more than just water and cotton wool (we have some reusable wipes which I find easier than cotton wool!) good luck, it's so miserable for them when their bums are sore xx

More nappy-free time will help in the short term.

Metanium is great - but it stains so don't put it on then let them go bare bummed on your white sheets!

I agree about giving disposable wipes a miss for a while. Water will do fine. I cut up a cheap fleece blanket into small washable wipes for times when DS's bum was v sore. It was kinder to his sore skin.

We eventually found out that DS was sensitive to certain brands of nappies - once we scrapped them and stuck to one supermarket own brand we had very little recurrence of the rash (cloth was fine too but we gave that up when he started nursery).

If it really won't heal, ask the GP. It could need some anti-fungal or anti-bacterial cream.

Similar happened with my dd when she was 6/7 months old. Took her to GP after 10 days of rash not improving. Turned out to be thrush not nappy rash and we were prescribed canesten. Worked quickly.

I'd get rash checked out, especially if metanium doesn't work.

My chemist recommended metanium, cotton wool and water to clean up not wipes and it was brilliant.

metanium=amazing. It got rid of quite severe nappy rash in our DD within a couple of days. We routinely apply it at night, when her nappy doesn't get changed frequently, and we've not seen nappy rash since.

another vote for avoiding wipes on nappy rash - i cut up a towel and used warm water. and i'd echo what seaweed74 said, we had the same thing a few weeks back and it turned out to be a fungal infection so it's worth getting checked by a gp if it's really terrible or not getting better with metanium (which you can get at the supermarket).

My daughter was plastered in metanium every day for months. Sudocrem did nothing. Also recommend trying different nappy brands. Beaming Baby nappies have far fewer chemicals and although mail order do next day delivery which is free if you order enough (ie about 4 packs). We actually used cloth nappies until 18 months and then the rash just got too bad. I am glad we saved some landfill, but TBH the cloth was not good for her bottom - much better now thankfully. When it was at its worst I actually got prescribed some barrier cream called Cavilon which is generally used for bedsores, so don't hesitate to talk to your GP.

You have to rub sudocrem to get it to really work, otherwise it's just a barrier. The skin needs to breathe and be dry. I used cotton nappies so would leave baby on a mat with a loose unfolded nappy wrapped over to catch wees.

Bepanthen is an alternative but would recommend u visit GP. My dd2 has developed a rash which goes with anti fungal/ steroid but hard to get rid of. My GP also reckoned dd2 allergic to chlorine in bleached nappies and suggested unbleached ones from boots. Didn't really work with my dd but may be worth a try!

If metanium doesn't clear it in a few days it probably is thrush. The doctor will prescribe antifungal cream which eill clear it up. Go sooner rather than later though as it gets very red and sore quite quickly. x
