How long do you leave it when disciplining?

For example, if I tell DS1 (just turned 3) he'll be on the naughty step if he does something one more time, how long do I leave it before the slate is effectively 'wiped clean'? How long can I reasonably expect him to remember he's not supposed to do something?

DS is 2.6 and I would say I expect him to remember within "that scene" so if you and he leave the room, you go out, have lunch, do another activity etc, then I start again as I dont think he'll probably remember. I might "remind him" if I think the likelihood of reoffending is high though.

About ten minutes for a 3yo.
