14mo DD not walking

My little girl is nearly 14 months and can cruise along furniture and use a walker but refuses to stand unaided and is showing no signs of walking. All little ones I know at this age have been walking for months. How can I encourage her without making it a drama and upsetting her? She has stood on her own before when distracted by something so I know she can do it!

Perfectly normal, she will do it when she is ready.

DS didn't walk til 16 months which was still well in the normal range.

Perfectly normal nothing to worry about. What helped encourage my DDs was a little push along wooden trolley thing. But yes, she'll do it when she's ready.

Thanks all . Yes she does have a little wooden trolley and has just started to turn it rather than drop to her knees and cry for me! So sure we'll get there soon then x

My DD didn't walk until 16mo and is now running just as well at 21mo as her cousin (same age) who was walking at 11mo. I understand why you wish it would happen but try to relax!

My dd is also 14mo and sounds just like yours. She's just about crusing (ish) around furniture but shows no signs of walking independently either. Infact if I try to guide or help her to do this (i.e. hold her hands) she just sticks her legs out at a 90 degree angle, sits down and then crawls off. Everyone says she'll do it when ready. I think that it's just like all the developmental stages, they do it when they are good and ready.

PS DD was also a late crawler.

DD1 didnt walk until 16 months either.

Completely normal, my dd4 didn't walk until 23m

I found with DS as he walked later he went straight into 'proper' walking rather than the couple of steps and fall type.

Again, my ds didn't walk until 14 months (that is NOT late btw!) but instead of doing the typical wobbly first few steps, he just got up one morning and walked the length of the sitting room unaided, his dad and I looked like this . I swear he must have been practising behind our backs!

14 months is still quite young, I think. Like others have said she'll probably get straight up and walk as if she's been doing it for weeks! My ds didn't walk until 21 months and when he did he just got up and walked into the kitchen one day as if it was no big deal

Yup dd was 14 months and a half before any proper unaided steps, as were all the kids in my family, she is doing fine although I remember being a little worried too, have friends who's babies walked at 9 mos etc. every one really is different. If she wasn't walking by 18 mos I'd probably go to the hv for a checkup just for reassurance.

Ps what helped with dd other than the push cart is to put her favourites toys in places where she can see them but can't get to them by cruising and a good bit of crawling.

The average (ie mean) age to walk is actually 15 mo. Your DD is totally normal. She is bearing weight so that's great. Try not to worry.

My twins are 14.5 mo - DD took a few steps last week but DS won't even hokd hands and walk, or push a truck - he cruises and has balanced for a second or two. Will start to worry at 18 months I think!

It's perfectly normal, honest!

DC1 was 23 months
DC2 was 15 months
DC3 was 9 months.

They're all very competent in their motor skills now and on par with other kids their age. The age range of achieving some milestones can be massive. Don't worry, she'll get there soon

Thank you all this is so reassuring. Amazing how they can all be so different. She is very petite with small feet too (2.5f) so is very dainty - this prob doesnt help. But I see this is totally normal now so thank you xxxxx

Sorry to hijack but did all your later walkers crawl or miss that step out? Dd 12 months seems to have no intention of crawling, pulling up or walking.

mumsnobest my DD did crawl but not properly until she was about 9-10mo x

I didn't walk til 16 months, didn't crawl at all.

I can do both now.

My DS walked at 15 months. That was three months ago, he still won't push a walker, they go too fast. He's not much for the adrenaline sports.

Oh and neither if us were as cute and dainty as your DD sounds. We were both sturdy to say the least

My dd is 17 months old and not walking. She'll stand for a little bit if you prop her against something so she can hold on and has only just started to pull herself up onto her feet (just a couple of times so far). I'm not too worried (now - few months ago was concerned she was being left behind by her wee friends).

She's a chatty wee thing and her fine motor skills are 'ahead of her age' apparently. It's just this one thing. Apparently some babies focus on the fine motor skills and talking before the gross motor skills. Whenever I whinge about her not walking my dad always says "be careful what you wish for". Apparently I was a nightmare when I learned to walk

My DD1 and DS walked around 15 or 16 months.

DD2 is 16 months and still doesn't walk. She can bear weight on her legs but can't pull up to standing or cruise or anything like that. I'm not worried though because of the weight bearing. Plus she shuffles around on her bum quite happily.

I know it's easier said than done but please don't worry.
