How to stop 6 year old from chewing his sleeves?

DS is 6 and has recently started chewing the sleeves of his jumpers/tops. He has ruined bith his school jumpers, which are an unusual colour and not available in cheap supermarkets so I can't afford to keep replacing them. Any ideas on breaking the habit?

I cant put him in short sleeves in this weather but thats all I can think of.

DS1 does this when he is anxious. A short term solution was to put the anti nailbiting stuff on his sleeves.

Try turning the cuff under and sew it in a few places just to hold it in place out of the way. My 7yr DS eats his as they're handy as he sucks his thumb.

ok will try both! Have spoken to his teacher and she said she'll distract him when she notices him doing it to. I wonder whats triggered it.

Ds1 tends to this when he has a tooth falling out. We just did sticker chart for a couple of weeks and he stopped. He did go through 6 ties in 3 weeks though - luckily they were only a couple of pounds each.

Like the nail polish idea!

My seven year old was a terrible chewer (fingers, clothes etc) and his OT who diagnosed him with a sensory processing disorder recommended chewing toys. They are rubber hammers that give a pleasant deep pressure sensation in the mouth for kids that like to chew.

Google sensory toys - there is a website and catalogue.

My DS1 chewed through every school jumper he had.. from reception age to yr 11 (sorry!) No anxieties..he just liked to chew!

He doesn't seem to eat through his clothes now that he has to pay for them himself tho Grin .. but then again he;s nearly 20!

ds1 is 7, he chews sleeves etc now and again and I am pretty sure it's when he has a new tooth coming through. He hasn't done it for ages, perhaps it was just a phase.

Thats interesting. He has just lost his second tooth and has one grown up tooth cut through.
