How to entertain my 4 week old?

I do lots of talking and singing to him, and he goes in his bouncy chair when I need to get something done. But I don't really know what else I should be doing with him to keep him entertained and help his development now he's spending more time in the day awake.

At 4 weeks there's not much! Walks in the buggy... my DD loved the lighting sections of IKEA and John Lewis... Playing music... I'd give DD things to smell if I was cooking or something (coffee, herbs etc)... At this point he just wants to be with you.

Lots of talking and showing things.

Reading any book you are reading out loud.

In sling, out for a walk.

Different sensations- tickle him with a feather on the hands, blow gently on this face.

Take up baby massage- very relaxing for babies and lovely for moisturising! Dancing to music holding him.

Stick him in a sling if you need to do anything that you can do with a sling on- vacuuming etc...

This little piggy went to market, round and round the garden etc...

You can usually spot a seasoned mother out without her child- she's the one describing everything she can see to herself loudly and cheerfully!

Hang in there- it's only a few weeks to survive before he starts to respond and it all becomes a lot more of a conversation. And congratulations.

Oooh, just remembered, might be worth a try, it's weird but actually worked for DD3: park him in front of the washing machine (while it's running). No idea why but it seems very soothing.

Oh yes, the washing machine. Forgot that one!
