Is 3 years 11 months too old to start nursery?

This is the age my son will be when he starts his school nursery.
He will go for 2 1/2 hours per day for a year until joining reception class.

My dd1 and ds started at 3y6m and both started school at 5y6m (in Scotland so possible). Dd2 started at 3y9m, started school 4y9m which seemed really young to me!

no, he is not too old. Why would you think that? Does he not have a place from the term after he is 3 as that is when funding usually starts?

Good age to start, he will probably be bored with everyday activities and need the extra stimulation, plus be ready for time away from you. He will have around a school year I suspect in nursery and as it is at the local school, assuming the school admissions policy means that you are highly likely to get a place, will move from the nursery to the reception class without any difficulty.

I've cared for several children who have gone to nursery for a few hours a week at nearly age 4, thus for the year prior to them entering school.

No he will not have a place in the term after his 3rd birthday as the school only have September intakes ( October baby ) which means he will be nearly 4 when he first goes

DS3 started school nursery at 3yrs 11months and 3weeks, ie he just missed the reception cut off. He is really enjoying himself.
