Red ears & slight temperature

DS 20mo has got very red & hot ears today. He pulls at them occasionally or tries to put his fingers in his ears. I noticed him doing the fingers in his ears thing the past day or two as well, but ears weren't red so I just thought it was him playing/imitating something he'd seen. He seemed to have a slightly raised temperature this morning and slept badly last night. He's a bit niggly today but doesn't seem to be in pain (he went down for his nap OK - didn't sleep as long as usual but I think that had more to do with the massive poo he'd done!).

I'm usually quite laid back when it comes to him being under the weather or having a slight temperature (i.e. just keep an eye on him and wait for it to pass), but I haven't got experience with the red ears thing. Could it be an infection? Should I take him to the GP with this? (Wouldn't be able to get an appointment until tomorrow at the earliest)

I was going to suggest teeth ie molars coming through. Tugging at ears can be a sign along with a slight temperature and sometimes runnier nappies.

But am not medical so wouldn't discount earache, especially if he's just had a cold or his appetite's dropped. Why not see how he is first thing and make an appointment. A doctor once said to me they'd rather see a 'clucky' mum and nip something in the bud than get called out to see a child in pain.

Ooh I hadn't thought about this, but he is due for his back molars I guess. And I noticed him pointing at his mouth and putting his fingers in his mouth when he woke up crying last night. Now that you've suggested it all the signs point to it really! Gahh was just getting used this lovely non-teething period!

Poor boy, whatever it is sounds uncomfortable, am sure mummy cuddles help.
