Does your 2 year old sleep?

All night every night, please be honest! Mine cant be the only one that still wakes surely? Sometimes for milk, sometimes teething pain but other times for no obvious reason... Goes down fine at 7pm but usually wakes at least once some time between 12 and 5 then sleeps again till 6

99% of the time he goes 7pm-7am.

but he isnt normal. the child is maniac in daytime hours.

otoh, his older sister (now 4) still doesnt sleep all night.

and she is also a maniac

perfectly normal to wake in the night are 2. ds1 was an awful sleeping but once he started sleeping through the night he rarely wakes now. ds2 still randomly wakes at night and he is 4. ds3 is 2 and he wakes in the night more than sleeps through. as you say there is always something. ds1 has night terrors, ds2 sometimes wets the bed, has a nightmare, falls out of the bed, we forget to turn night light on, is poorly, and ds3 - well who knows! sometimes I think he just wants to see me and dh! it does get better though.

Thanks for your replies, very reassuring all mothers i have met at toddler group delight in telling me how their DC have been perfect sleepers from 6 weeks... I was starting to feel very abnormal!

2.9 yo DS2 doesn't even remotely sleep through! We've just put a bed in our room for him....

DS1 was just over 2 when he started consistently sleeping through, coincided with getting his last teeth. He's 4.6 now and sleeps brilliantly so there's hope yet!

ds is 3 and i can count the number of times he has slept through on one hand

Ds is 2.5 and rarely sleeps through and I used to be able to say he was a great 7-7 sleeper

Surely he doesn't need milk in the night at 2? I you stopped that he might sleep through

Yes, he did when he was 2 (now 12 ) from 7pm - 6.30am ish (and a two hour nap in the afternoon) !

My 2.3 DD still wakes most nights, just once anything between midnight and 5am. Never upset or needing anything, just wakes to have a chat with herself for a while. I rarely have to go to her these days, she eventually goes back to sleep and so do I so it's not too bad. I would just like her to stop waking at all. I suppose she just will when she's ready. Dont listen to others who gloat about their perfect sleepers, I have found that the definition of 'sleeping through' seems to differ from person to person. Eg, "my dc sleeps through, only wakes once for milk" . It'd be nice if there was a little more honesty amongst us instead of the competition to have the best baby!

My 2 yo sleep all night but doesnt actually go to sleep until gone 10pm at least.

She normally wakes up about 8am.

3.8 here, and rarely get a full night (11 hrs) from him.

His little brother, on the other hand, is a dream, thank goodness.

2.1 ds sleeps through 7.30-7.30 95% of the time. In the last week has started waking asking for his dummy where previously he ould just find it himself, but 2 seconds and he's resettled.
He is still waiting for his last 2 teeth so fully expect some bad nights when they appear

Oh and despite not waking for milk from around 12 weeks, he was still waking several times a night for dummy, cuddles or random reasons until approx 15 mo when he moved into his own room.

I've got one that woke about 5 times a night till she was 3 and another who sleeps through at 16 weeks! Each child is different. Might be helpful to not be giving milk in the night; just water. We started giving dd a banana and milk right before bed and that seemed to help her sleep through.

You're right i do need to stop the milk- she was failure to thrive for the first year in and out of hospital and we got used to night feeds being an extra source of calories. Shes gaining weight steadily now so i guess its time to give it up, is it best to go cold turkey or dilute it down do you think?
its always a last resort once she's been up for ages that i give in!

I'd do as leelteloo says - supper before bed then only water in wakings. Might help, you never know

the book 'teach your child to sleep' gives some great advice and different techniques to help with sleep issues.

It's good to read this thread and realise we are not alone. DS is 2.3 and usually wakes at least once a night, often more.

All my friends in RL are bored of me whinging about it now, but we are knackered!

He slept all night last night so I know he can do it, but he doesn't often. It seems totally random, and unrelated to how much exercise / stimulation / food / sleep he has had during the day

I went cold turkey with the milk at night when she was 9 months. I found that she did wake less once she realised there would be no food. But the reality was that nothing we tried stopped her waking. In the end I was so desperate for sleep and so sick with morning sickness that I slept with her. Did this for 2 months and when I felt better and moved out, she continued to sleep through. It broke the pattern? Not sure I'd advocate it as a sleep solution but I was beside my self with sleep deprivation.

Yes my ds is 2.5 & sleeps through from 8pm-7am if he's napped, & 7pm-8 or 9am if he hasnt napped. The only time we have to settle him at night is if he's poorly, otherwise if he wakes in the night he usually rolls over & goes back to sleep without us having to go in. All that said, he hasnt always been this way, from 6-18 months he was up at 5-5.30am most days & sometimes even earlier. So am making the most of the recent sleepy spell!

I agree with pp's most people have a different definition of sleeping through, so wrt your friends lo's it may not be as it seems. I do think you would see some improvement in the night wakings if you cut the night feeds tho.x
