Sides on cot at 2yo

Hi my DD has just turned 2 and she is still sleeping in her cot with the sides on. She is not a climber so has never attempted to get out and settles fine on a night time.
I was just wondering how old your LOs were.
Was just thinking would be nice for her to have new bedding etc.
maybe a case of if its not broke dont fix it and take them off when it becomes an issue? Or do it while I have no issues?

I would need more reason to do it than giving her new bedding personally.

DS was 18 months which was much younger than I planned but he started refusing to sleep in a cot but would sleep in a bed.

I second 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

DS was 3.3yrs until he decided to climb out of his cot bed. He didn't even hurt himself he was tall enough to vault it, then he went into a bed.

His sister did it at 2.6 so she had to have the sides off and mornings / bedtimes have been chaotic ever since.

Make the most of him being contained .

i posted about this recently
dd2 is 2.2, and still sleeping well in a cot bed with sides up
i do not intend to move her unless a) she climbs out, b) she becomes unsettled at night, c) she asks for a Big Girls Bed, or d) she stops wearing night nappies

here's hoping she can make it to reception age

Sorry after I have read that back that bit didn't sound as I meant it! She only has a fleecy blanket and the thin quilt from her bedding set when she was born but seems to really like my duvet when she gets in my bed on a morning and is maybe warmer for her? (I am not going I take sides off just for new bedding)

I've been thinking the same recently. My DD is 2.3 and is still in her cot. She's not a climber, has never attempted to vault it yet! She's always been brilliant at going to bed both at naptimes and bedtimes. However still wakes in the night most nights to just have a chat with herself etc. This is what puts me off converting it into a bed incase she'd be tearing round her bedroom and pulling all her nappies/clothes out of her cupboards in the middle of the night! Or coming hunting for us So have decided to keep her confined for as long as possible!

I left DD1 in her cot till she was 3, she was happy enough but I had to move her into a bed as DD2 needed the cot. DD1 rarely gets out of her bed, is almost like she does think to get out because she never has been able too - is great!

Another one here who wouldn't convert to a bed till as near to age 3 as possible unless they are climbing out...both mine were happily still contained till age 3, and then made the bed transition very easily with minimum fuss and disruption. Making it too early can cause all sorts of issues (not settling, night waking, early morning waking etc) so unless you have the safety issue of them climbing, leave well alone

No reason why you can't get her a cot duvet and a pretty cover though...you can still leave the cot sides on. We had a cot duvet for our DC, I think it was from mothercare, and they did some nice covers and co-ordinating cot sheets too.

DD got a single bed with proper duvet etc for her 2nd birthday - did use a bed guard though.
We hadn't had any climbing problems or anything just that she's tall and it was quite a small cot.

Dd1 is 2.4 and still has her sides on. I'm in the if it ain't broke don't fix it camp, she's never objected to them and as her bedroom is at the top of the stairs and she'll soon be sharing with dd2 I like knowing that she's safe and can't wander around.

DD is 2.7 and still has the sides on the cot. We got her a cot duvet when she turned two and she's lovely and cosy and happy in there. I've no intention of changing things till she asks.

Took my DS's cot sides down at 2.2. No real reason to, was happy in his cot. I liked the idea of him pottering into our room in the morning. We've had no issues at all, and he loves his big boy duvet and pillow (was in sleeping bag before that).

DD went into a proper bed at 22 months. She wasn't a climber but I wanted her to be settled in her own bed before DS turned up - I didn't want her to think the baby had turned up and 'stolen' her cot.

She settled in it ok and has a stairgate on her door to keep her from roaming the house at night.

Thanks ladies. I have looked into the cotbed duvets, she uses a normal size pillow so the pillow cases from the bedding sets won't fit but I could just use the duvet cover. Defiantly going to leave sides on as long as possible. I like the idea of her coming into my room in the mornings but don't like the thought that she isn't aware of the time and it may be far too early!
