Please tell me how you discipline your 5 year old

This is my first post on this board and I'm really hoping for some advice on how to discipline my 5 year old ds.
He can be a lovely boy but also so frustrating. He doesn't listen to me when I ask him to do things, he's started answering back or having an answer for everything. He won't sit nicely at the table and waves his cutlery around. He always wants things, toys, snacks, treats etc. He'a started being rude and cheeky to me and dh and I feel like I'm losing all control and that none of the punishments we use have any effect. Time out means nothing to him, he will just laugh and be silly. We've tried taking away toys, stopping tv etc but nothing seems to bother him.

He can be lovely, play nicely and he is bright and caring but I just don't know how to handle the periods of bad behaviour. I have a 9 month old dd who he adores and he has just started school which he seems to enjoy.

Please could you give me some ideas as to how to discipline him. I am so worried he will turn into a spoilt brat with no respect for us. Thank you.

We have a star chart (I downloaded the free ireward app on my phone) and he gets points for reading, kindness, getting ready for school and going to bed on time. When he's got 25 he can have a friend for tea after school.

He's not fussed about naughty steps or whatever, and I won't hit him.

Thanks for replying. So if he's naughty would you take points away? Someone told me not to do take them away but I need to do something that will actually bother him and have an effect.

yes. It's a really good app, he gets kindness points taken away if he pushes his sister, for example. He'll get a point for just getting through the day without doing anything bad, I give him two or three if he goes out of his way to be nice.
