8.5 months and not crawling! Please reassure me.

DS is 8.5 months. He sat up at 6 months but gets bored being in the same place for more than about 3 minutes. He can't crawl yet though and it's starting to worry me. He rolls across rooms and can go about 2 metres in one go and he can also change direction. He's recently started bending his knees sometimes when he go to put him down on his tummy. He stays in the crawling position for about 30 seconds and then collapses on his tummy again. He's very inquisitive though and I wonder whether he doesn't bother trying to crawl because he gets around by rolling instead. He's also able to stand while holding on to the side of his cot or a chair. Please reassure me that he's ok!

He's ok! Some don't bother at all & go straight to walking! Cliche but enjoy it whilst he is relatively immobile. Think DS was around 8.5-9 months also - he walked at 12months. Nothing at all to fret about - I'm not even sure crawling is classed as a developmental milestone as it is so variable.

Completely normal, don't worry. My daughter sat up at 10 months, crawled at 12, walked at 17 months. She's now 13 and is a competitive swimmer and dancer...

By the way DS crawled for first time on holiday, on carpet. Our floors at home were all wooden/stone - I often wondered if he simply didn't want to crawl on a cold/hard surface?!

CaroleService · 18/01/2013 14:17

Neither of mine crawled at all. I wondered about wooden floors too. My ds did a fine commando crawl though. DD bottom-shuffled.

Themobstersknife · 18/01/2013 14:18

I think not crawling at 8.5 months is more common than crawling at 8 months. Please don't sweat it. They are an absolute liability once they start crawling!

MumVsKids · 18/01/2013 14:18

Ds is 9 months and not crawling, I'm not worried - every baby is different and he'll go when he's ready. :)

neolara · 18/01/2013 14:19

Normal. Crawling is considered optional in development of gross motor skills. Don't worry.

MirandaWest · 18/01/2013 14:21

DS crawled at 8.5 months and was an earlier one out of other babies I knew of the same age.

DD moved at 10.5 months (wasn't crawling which she did at about 2 I think).

Both DC walked at 15 months.

CrazyOldCatLady · 18/01/2013 14:23

DD didn't crawl till 13 months, DS has just started at 11.5 months. Don't worry, he'll get there : )

DD did not crawl at all. She walked at 15mo so there was quite a long period of her being immobile and annoyed!

Honestly make the most of it dd1 commando crawled at 26 weeks to the day Shock dd2 at 7 and a half months. Neither of them sat particularly early and a good month after they were mobile Confused. Freaking nightmares the pair of them I was sooo jealous of the people with sitting/ playing babies.
