When they start eating. Give him finger foods and let him at it.

From 5-7 months most babies are able to pick food up and get it in their mouths.

From 10-12 months most can have a go at feeding themselves with a spoon (start by loading the spoon for them and handing it to them or leaving it within reach for the baby to pick up).

By 18 months most are able to feed themselves fairly well with cutlery and fingers.

About six months for finger foods. You don't need to teach them just put the food on their tray and they'll get the idea. I have a fab video of DS eating cottage pie with his fingers at around 9 months. We did baby led weaning though.

Also, make sure you are eating meals with him, so he is seeing what you are doing, rather than just sitting and feeding him. Babies learn by imitating adults.
