18mo only saying half words

Hi,

my DS has suddenly learnt a few words. He had none up until Christmas. Now he has a handful of words (maybe 10) but he can only say the first syllable or sound. Eg To for toast. C for Car. Go for Gone.

He can do lots of animal sounds but tends to do the sound rather than the word for the sound eg he snorts for a pig rather than oink oink. Some animals he does the first syllable thing eg mmmm for moo.

He hasn't mastered any requests yet, so he'll use the words for things he seen or statements eg Go for 'all gone'.

So how do I help him develop his words so that he can say the full word. He can babble for england and hold full conversation in gibberish, and has no problems linking syllables and sounds then, so I'm sure it will come. I guess I'd like some tips on how to help his speech improve as he is extremely frustrated most of the time with lots of whining and I'm sure it's to do with not being able to communicate very easily.

Thanks in advance.

PPL - watching with interest as 20 month DS is the same with most of his words. Just says half. Also it's only in the last couple of months his vocal has expanded, so sit tight Smile

DS is also great with animal sounds! Had HV out as I was so concerned about his speech and that's a very good sign. As is them being able to follow instructions: "Bring mummy the ball," etc.

Thanks, that sounds encouraging. Yes he has great animal sounds, can follow those kinds of instructions and is amazingly good at pointing out body parts (his party trick!)
