My DS is 22 months. He seems to have a very strong overreaction to everyday events. Today, he was helping FIL pack some things away and when FIL put the bsg into a box, DS had a full on meltdown. It seemed different to a tantrum, his cry was properly distressed, he cried proper tears.

He did the same when I rolled his sleeve up at tea time and wwouldn't eat any more. He looked at me like I'd just been horrible to him and held his arms out for a cuddle. He did yhat sobbing breathing thing.

The HV came over and he screamed and clung to me the entire 45 mins. Tried to put him down and he kicked and screamed some more.

Is this all normal? It seems a bit extreme!

How is his language developing? He's only 22 months.....so it's quite early yet...but he could have some sensitivities to touch or sound.

Also, did the HV manage to complete her checks? Did she make you another appointment if not.

He's good at linking 2 or 3 words together but his actual vocab is small for his age. He has been saying more the past few weeks though. I know he gets frustrated easily, especially when he can't say what he wants to. But it's when you interrupt something he's focussed on that he gets really upset with.

The HV just came over to introduce herself and see how we were getting on. She thought he sounded ok from what she'd seen/I'd said. He has his 2yr check soon, although that's just a questionnaire so I'm not sure if that'll flag up anything like sensitvities?

I hadn't thought of that but you could have a point. When we get him changed out of pyjamas he gets very upset and tries to take his clothes off to put the pjs back on. He hates socks too.

Do I need to do anything?

How many times a day does he do this?

Dd is a few months older and burst into tears the other day because she couldn't open a cupboard door but she's definitely worse if I'll or tired or hungry.

I also vividly remember ds crying inconsolably one time because he saw a doll in a shop and it's dress had different coloured sleeves - he cried for hours - proper full on sobbing.

However, if its a constant thing I think I'd get the HV to have a proper chat with you. It might just be that's he's a sensitive wee soul - was he a difficult baby?

Again, control thing. Maybe he thought you were going to interfere in his meal.

I can't read that one, but I expect you could if you thought back hard, what was the exact moment that stressed him out. Maybe he just doesn't like strangers?

It's not constant Bea, it was just a lot worse yesterday which is what prompted me to post! I used to think he was a difficult baby, but I think my PND clouded my thinking, because actually I think we were quite lucky. At about 6 weeks old he stopped falling asleep at the breast and wouldn't just fall asleep in your arms/bouncy chair etc. He started getting OT and crying a lot. We spent ages rocking, bouncing, swaying etc trying to get him to go but he fought it. At about 8/9 weeks we popped him in his cot awake and he settled himself off to sleep! He wil nap for England in his cot but won't fall asleep where he isn't "restrained" - he will nap in the lounge in his pram but won't sleep on the sofa.

He does like to be in control Grumpy. He's very particular about where things go/where people sit etc. I've always put it down to normal toddler behaviour, it's just lately his reactions seemed different. Maybe he's teething or tired though.

He doesn't usually like strangers. He can even be a bit funny with family!
