mannerism cough in 7yr old ds

After having a cough and a cold which he has now recovered from, my ds has developed this mannerism, either clearing his throat 2 or 3 times a minute or coughing. I can relate, he feels as tho he has snot at the back of his throat all the time, but it has definitely become a habit. What on earth can I do to break this? It is really irritating but more importantly I'm worried that he will damage his vocal chords.

Can anyone help?

He doesn't have a post nasal drip? Where mucous drips down the back of the throat after a common virus?

My friend's dd developed a habitual cough after a virus and the doc said to ignore it. Went on for months though. In the end it just stopped.

My DS is also 7. He developed a sniffing up habit after getting over a bad cold. It drove me mad for weeks. He did sound congested and couldn't blow his nose as nothing would come out. I got him checked by the GP and there was nothing wrong. I just put up with it and ignored it, pleased to say the habit has now eventually stopped. He developed a few tics this year, which thankfully didn't last long. It's probably an age related thing and your DS will soon forget about it.

Totally ignore it. Lots of children develop an annoying mannerism and the more you mention the longer it will carry on. If they are prone to this they often develop to doing something even more annoying!
