How baby eye colour change

Most threads are about when baby eye colour changes and how to genetically predict the change. Unfortunately the genetic prediction is very vague.
Does anybody know what to look out for to guess the final colour? For example:
shade "behind" the blue/grey
outer ring of iris vs inner part of iris
dark blue to brown or darker shade only
dark blue to light blue or lighter colours
and so on.

my DDs are 2 months old and have dark blue eyes... I'm staring at them every day hoping they'll go lighter!

DD2 (4 weeks) has navy eyes. I think I can see a hint of green in them but not sure.

So I am watching with interest.

chrismissymoomoomee · 06/12/2012 12:58

In the vast majority of cases they eyes will go darker not lighter. If one of you has brown eyes then thats likeley to be the colour they will go.

NarcolepsyQueen · 06/12/2012 13:00

In my experience they go darker, not lighter too.

moonbells · 06/12/2012 13:05

Mid to dark blue will usually go green or brown. Of the babies in my NCT who were born with pale blue eyes, all are still blue-eyed. DS had dark blue and they went brown, though it took the best part of 2 years!

silverdragonfly · 06/12/2012 13:08

When DD was born her eyes were really hard to describe - kind of dark blue I suppose but a really non-descript colour. They went a very beautiful kind of chocolate brown.

FredKiller · 06/12/2012 13:09

DS had navy eyes for about 8/9 months. Now they are dark, ivy green and very unusual. I'm very jealous. I have light green eyes and DH has dark brown so they're a perfect mix (yes, I know that isn't quite how genetics work!)

headfairy · 06/12/2012 13:13

ds's dark blue eyes are now dark dark brown (he's 5). Dd's eyes were bright blue from the day she was born and are still strikingly bright blue.

difficultpickle · 06/12/2012 13:19

When ds was born you couldn't distinguish his iris from his pupil. By 3 months they were mid bluey grey. By 7 they were hazel, which I assume will stay.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 06/12/2012 16:12

Dd was born with brown eyes that have now went a very bright blue just like her mothers Grin

phantomhairpuller · 06/12/2012 16:16

DS was born with very dark blue eyes, they are now the most piercing blue Grin

MrsBungleBear · 06/12/2012 16:18

Both my DC's had navy blue eyes when born. Both of them turned to quite a light blue colour (like mine).

BahSaidPaschaHumbug · 06/12/2012 16:20

DS had mid blue eyes when he was born, now they are sort of ambery in the centre of the iris and bluey grey around the outside. From directly ahead they look blue and from the side they look hazel. He's 2.3 years old.

LadyofWinterfell · 06/12/2012 16:21

DD1 was born with almost black eyes, went dark brown by 10 days.
DD2 had bright blue eyes till 10m, then green, now a kind of olive/hazel depending on her mood.
DS Bright blue and stayed blue. He was very blond too and is now getting darker (at 3.3years)

Purplelooby · 06/12/2012 16:48

If one of you has brown eyes then thats likeley to be the colour they will go.

This isn't true. However, if neither of you have brown eyes then they can't go brown.

DS has very dark navy eyes which are now a gorgeous dark, rich brown. They changed quickly - by around 5 weeks I think.

Purplelooby · 06/12/2012 16:49

has = had (I'm tired and typing with one hand as DS is asleep on the other...)

ScarletLady02 · 06/12/2012 18:05

DD's eyes didn't change until she was nearly a year old! They were very dark grey/blue and then went brown.

I've got sectoral heterochromia and that didn't show until I was around year old...my eyes were blue before.

lilypaige · 07/12/2012 00:45

How many of you with blue eyed babies keep the same colour? My dd is 7.5 months and has had the same bright blue colour since birth, wondering if they will stay or change. I have dark brown eyes and dads is the same as dds. Love her eye colour its so pretty!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 07/12/2012 00:49

DD1s eyes were bright blue from day one and they still are now at 3.10!

BionicEmu · 12/12/2012 11:37

I know this thread is from last week, but wanted to add my DS's weird eyes!

He was born with very, very dark eyes, they looked black. They gradually lightened, and now at 2.1 he has lovely bright blue eyes. So his eyes did go from dark to light. DH and I, and both of our parents, all have blue eyes. DS was 6 weeks early though, I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

TheNightwearBeforeChristmas · 12/12/2012 20:08

DS1 was born with dark blue eyes, they got darker and had green in the middle, by five months, they were hazel like mine.

DS2 was born with medium blue eyes, they've become darker but still blue at the moment (5 months). DH's are blue/green so I'm hoping he takes after him.

Both of them have long eyelashes like me though.

CharlieBoo · 12/12/2012 22:53

Ds has had the most piercing blue eyes from very tiny and have stayed that way. Dds were a darker blue and have turned into a bluey/lightgreen colour, unusual.
