Potty training...aargg..help!

hiya, i would appreciate any helpful advice you can give. I have started potty training dd1 yesterday, and well... there have been accidents. She seems to be afraid of the potty, but also seems to be afraid of the normal toilets (has baby seat). I had removed her nappy during the day, but put it on her last night and tonight. I know i shouldn't do that (at least that is what i've read). Has anyone done that with their kids, leaving nappy on during the night? If so, has it had any problems? Any tips would be greatfully accepted.

you might be better posting in the potty training section - but.....my dd was afraid of the toilet so just use a potty until she is a bit more confident. and i did put nappy on at night (only just taken it off) it is too much to cope with at night (for mums and well as little ones) She has been out of nappies since august and taking it off now hasn't proved any problems yet. I used the Gina Ford book for tips etc. Also maybe just have the potty out and about in the house- i did this for about 3 weeks when at home with no clothes on etc (dd with no clothes on!)also said thinfs lke - 'oh quick sit here and i'll tell you a story' and then made up some loopy story that kept her entertained for a while. then before i embarked on it properly she asked to do a wee beofre she got in the bath!! I was so chuffed i called my mum to tell her (very sad!) - so just stick with it!

thanks very much. just got back. really appriciate it as it was worrying me. and i don't think it is sad calling your mom about it. i would do the same. and i will try to post on the potty thread, i didn't know there was one.

Ninaar I don't know who told you to leave the nappy off at night but IME dry at day and dry at night can be very far apart.
DS2 for eg who is just 3 was reliably dry in the day not long after 2, but still in nappies at night until a couple of weeks ago.
So don't worry about the night.
As far as daytime accidents go, try to stick with it as far as you can, but if you have many many accidents and no wish to use potty, maybe it's not time to do it. How old is yr dd?

she will be 2 in about 2 weeks time. i had read in some parenting place or other not to put nappies back on once you remove it. she had been pestering me to use the toilet and holding her wee/poo since last summer but do to circumstances couldn't. so i gave it a try now.

hi mydd3 was a nightmare no where near being dry at all about two months ago but suddenly with a little help from her pre school she was dry in a week.
But she still has a nappy on at night and up to now only one accident she was too busy to know that she needed a wee-(her words).
She is 3 and 4 months so personally would not fret about nights she actually got up twice for a wee the other night but other nights she is not aware trial and error I think and different fo every child. good luck x

I started training my just turned 3 year old on Saturday. We have an Easter support thread on the Potty Training section - come and join us!

You will see comments saying not to put nappies back on once you remove it but they mean daytime not night (well, they do on here anyway!). What they mean by this is do not put a nappy on when you want to go out etc. as this confuses them, once you start, stick at it. That type of thing :)

thank you all for replying, all your comments have put a lot of pressure off me. she seems better today. i think the problem was that she didn't want to use the potty but was okay with the normal toilet seats. less accidents today, thank God. i will check out the potty thread now and a4g, i think that is fab, wish there was some place i could take her. there is lots of influence at schools even for toddlers.
