2 year old not telling us when she has a dirty nappy

my 2 year old has never cared if she has a dirty nappy, she never cried if her nappy was dirty as a baby and now doesn't tell anyone if she needs changing. I'm concerned she'll get nappy rash. What can I do to encourage her to tell us? Occasionally she does & we praise her highly - is she too young for me to worry though?

Don't think any of mine ever told me - I just smelled their bottoms! I think the onus will be on you to check a lot. Id she is in disposables she won't be able to tell from the feel of the nappy that she has done a wee as she won't be wet - never had a child tell me they had weed!

My DD never told me when she had a dirty nappy either. I just decided at 2.7 that she had enough understanding to be potty trained and she was dry in a couple of weeks. DS tells me when he's pooed, but going to wait until after Christmas to start with him when he will be the same age as DD was.

I think it's quite unusual for a 2 year old to tell when they have crapped. Just keep your sense of smell about you, she may get nappy rash from time to time if you miss one, but shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Thanks for quick replies! I'll keep sniffing! She flatly denies pooing, even if she's obviously having one!

DD was 2 last month and she likes to try and sniff her own bum and declare that she's not poo'd. Guess what we do ha!
She's just this week started doing it right before she does actually poo so I'm thinking she's getting there?
DD has been pretty regular for a while though.

When ds first started potty training, we were on a day out and he started breathing heavily in the style of someone having a poo. I asked him several times whether he was in fact having a poo. He denied it repeatedly, but was caught out in the lie when a large shit dropped out of the bottom of his shorts and rolled into the road. He was still trained within 2 weeks though

DD's gone from flatly denying it to blaming her teddies. "Mummy, Baa Baa's done a poo!" I guess that means we're getting closer...

Reminds me of the time that my lovely two year old boy decided to 'check my nappy' by pulling out the rear of my pants and peering down the back.

Unfortunately I was on the beach wearing a tankini and bending over to dig a sandcastle at the time, so I ended up mooning the north sea!

My DD still a baby but never cries with a dirty nappy - in fact quite pleased with herself! Just have to keep my nose out! 3 year old twin nieces (not nappy trained but parents haven't tried yet) - they never tell us but we get a whiff and then ask them if they've got a dirty nappy - they shake their heads and point at the other twin! If that fails they point at their baby sister!!
