DD1 freaks out after playgroup

Today was dd1's (2.7) second morning in playgroup - she's supposed to go two mornings a week from this term. She started Tuesday - everything went great, she enjoyed herself, but on the way home (we were walking) she suddenly insisted that she wanted to see her Gran. I said no (because Gran wasn't at home, also I want to scale the visits down now after dd1 saw her nearly every day over Christmas). DD1 totally lost it, I had to carry her home kicking and screaming, as she tried to run away from me. At home I locked the door, and she ranted and raved for a good 30 minutes, totally oblivious to anything I said to her, before collapsing into my arms. Today nearly same story - great at playgroup, went to Sainsbury's straight after- no problem, but when I wanted to put her back in the car she started screaming, said she wanted to go back into Sainsbury's - I had to force her into the carseat, as dd2 was screaming too and I needed to get home. We've been home for 30 minutes now, and dd1 is sitting screaming by the front door, which I had to lock again, again she's oblivious to what I'm saying to her, so I've just left her to get on with it.
What is the matter with her? She normally doesn't lose it like this, I'm totally mystified what brought this on! Oh, I've stayed with her at playgroup so far by the way, as I'm on rota next session, and I didn't want to confuse her by first being gone and then there again, I'm planning to leave her after that.
Anybody got any advice? I'm pretty desperate!

She's just calmed down, as if a switch had been turned. Very weird.

dd sometimes plays up after nursery (she did today in fact). I think it's because she gets overtired - when she goes to nursery she doesn't get her usual wind-down-before-nap time.

Does your dd still have a nap? If not how long ago did she stop (could it be that nursery wears her out so much she needs one again?? )
