Should i be worried?

Hi all,

Im worried as my 8 months old baby cant sit on his own. Like with a bit of support e.g. if i hold his feet he can sit up but otherwise nope he cant. But when he is sitting he doesnt fall to the side.He can hold himself in a upright position. But i dont know if thats normal. I know every baby is different but i just wanted to know if you ever experienced this.
Im a first time mother so i get very worried when i think oh i dont think he should be doing this or that.

My DS was a very laid back baby, very chilled out, smilely & happy. He was in no rush to do anything. He seemed slow to reach those early milestones. He was 9 months before he sat up steadily, 13 months before he crawled on all fours (commando crawled with much effort before then) & 17 months before he walked.

I don't know if it's true but a lot of people say it's a boy thing too but true in my experience as DD is already walking at 13 months.

without seeing him I guess he's ok, but perhaps a little less coordinated than some other babies,
you can tell if what he does is in line with how he's been developing so far

books are good to give you an idea of roughly what to expect at each stage, but sadly babies can't read books and rarely do what they "should"!

it's the same with walking, speech etc - they do vary so much!
mine typically took their 1st steps after 1st birtday, cousins fully walking at 9 months, others bottom shuffling till 15 months and not a step

he should have an 8 months check up, so discuss this with HV/GP, but he sounds like he's on his way, if he's otherwise happy, healthy and everything is so far so good I wouldn't worry, he'll get there

I've childminded a couple of babies who sat steadily later than this. They both did everything else at the right time and are doing very well.

Some babies just take their time with one or two things. It's rarely a reflection of their coordination or general development.

Your HV might want to do an extra check to make sure he's doing it in a couple of months. She might also put your back up by seeming to assume that you're not giving your baby lots of opportunity to sit, move freely, reach for toys etc and tell you to do lots of things you are already doing. Don't be offended. That's her job because once in a while she will come across a parent who needs to be told.
