13mo, impossible nappy changes!

This has been going on for a while now, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to change DS's nappy. We've tried toys and other things to distract him, but nothing works for very long and he's back to flipping all around and trying to get away. Any tips?

Do you do the changes while he stands up?

This was my dd a while back now and ds is similar but not as bad. We tried everything and sometimes it's not easy to do standing up especially poos. So we resorted too putting my leg over her just under her arms so she was gently restrained. It was always like this but you got to do what u got to do. With ds I sing really loud or do it standing.

I could try standing, but I imagine poos would be quite difficult! And we use a changing table, so I doubt I could reach my leg that high to restrain him ;)

Time to try another one, singing voice ready :)

At that age I started using CBeebies. Lie down quietly - tv goes on. Stand up, roll over or crawl away - tv goes off. Worked for DS!

Oh and moved from the changing table to the floor in front of the tv obviously.

My dd still does this. One time she crawled off turned round, sat and did a big poo on the carpet - all with a cheeky smile on her face. Lovely! A laugh or cry moment. I found that involving her in nappy changes helped occupy her ie getting her to hold the wipes / spare nappy

I bought a changing mat with a harness from a company called Rabbitt when DD was the same (and at the same age). By the time the changing may had arrived, she'd grown out of that phase

Yes if he is wriggling you really, really need to stop using the changing table.

Defo do it standing up. It's easier than you think. Put a toy on a low table and ask then to stand playing with it. Whip the nappy off, and as you do use the top bit to wipe the worst off then just do your normal cleaning taking care to get in the creases - which is in fact easier as at least they aren't running off. Pop the new one on. Job done! Mine did go back to lying down about 6 months later.

DS started doing this around 13 months too. I find that giving him warnings really helps and have turned it into a bit of a game ... I get the changing mat out and start patting it saying 'come on, nappy time!' He enjoys toddling towards it, then toddling away, 'tricking' me! After a couple of times of this I'll say, 'mummy's going to catch you' and will grab him and lay him on mat then give him a little tickle before changing. He generally enjoys the whole process. I think what really helps is, like a lot of things with toddlers, that he knows it's coming!

DD did this for a while too. I used to a) take her trousers off and let her wander around, b) get everything ready for the change, c) lie her down on the floor, nappy off and quick wipe keeping hold of her legs so she couldn't wriggle away, d) let her roll away half-naked and wriggle/crawl away while I cleared up, e) new nappy on standing up. She's grown out of the phase now, but I still have to try and keep the bit where she's restrained to a minimum.
