Treating Colic

AbiMae · 03/11/2012 13:54

I'm currently in my 2nd year of sixth form college, and intending to study medicine at university. I'm doing an Extended Project Qualification, researching colic and as part of this, have constructed a questionnaire. I'd greatly appreciate if any mumsnet members could help me out with this by answering a few questions. It's totally anonymous, but the more responses I get, the better my research will be. Questions below, thanks!

How old is your baby?

Does/has he/she suffered from colic?
Yes No
If Yes,

  • When did the colic develop?

  • How old was s/he when it ended? (if appropriate)

How was your baby fed from birth?
Bottle Breast Mixed
If you have swapped the method of feeding, how old was s/he when you did?

At what age was s/he weaned?

Have you tried any treatments for colic?
Yes No
If yes,

  • What treatment(s) have you tried?

  • Have you noticed any positive changes following this?

Neither of mine suffered colic, but I wonder if you are aware of this connection?

Dr Kotlow

Tongue and lip ties are something that the medics in this country are woefully lacking in knowledge about.

How old is your baby? 24 months

I did not swap or offer any formula

At what age was s/he weaned? 6 months combo baby led weaning and purees

Have you tried any treatments for colic? Yes
Yes No
If yes,
-What treatment(s) have you tried?

Dr browns bottles- he refused bottles so no real help.

Baby tummy / colic massage - helped ALOT! Wish all health visitors taught this to new mums. My second baby is not colicky so far but when he does have a bad tummy I repeat this massage and it helps. Email me / private message me if you want a photo copy of the instructions. I will try to dig them out. Just helped him be a little less in pain. I had to do it at specific times 2-3 times a day.

Infacol. Helped some. He burped much better and therefore had less air in his tummy to create trouble later

Gripe water, did not help my son

Time in a swing / born bouncer- he did well having some time slightly upright after some feeds. As he got older and needed to be in his cot from bedtime this got harder, but obviously the colic was gradually getting better anyway,

Wearing baby in sling, continuing skin to skin, and other back to basic things also seemed to help.... The more contact he had with me and less external stimulation after 1pm the better the evening went.

A DVD called happiest baby on planet ( he also has a book) also helped immensely dealing with the crying and gave DH and I some real solutions for how to help our little man. Video better than book as its shorter (more realistic for new parents who have no time) and also "seeing" how to do things is a very easy way to learn rather than reading a technique but having in real knowledge of how it should work. The 5 s's as he calls them really helped a lot.

-Have you noticed any positive changes following this? As above
