Ds is 2.10 and has speech problems, any advice would be welcome

Ds is 2.10, and he is a very happy, determined boy, very affectionate, and can do all the thinks I think he should be able to do , like puzzles, and towers and count to 10 etc. He was slow to talk, and does talk although in samller sentences 3 or 4 words, but he's quite difficult to understand, he doesn't seem to pronounce things properly. He started nusery in September and his teacher agrees that he is behind others his age? What should I do know and how can I help him, what's the next step? Please any advice welcome..

In what way is it difficult to understand him?
Does he pronounce his vowel sounds properly but seem to miss out the consonants?
Maybe he sounds slightly like a deaf person does when they speak?

If that is the case, it suggests that he might have fluid in his ears.
This would be easily diagnosed by a specialist and could be treated by gromits.
I have two friends whose sons had this issue. Their speech was really hard to understand, but after the appropriate treatment they made rapid progress and caught up with the speech of their peers.

Yes it is a bit like a deaf person, but he had a hearing test when he was a baby, do you think getting his ears checked is the way forward, sometimes he speaks clearly, but sometimes it's like he's talking when his mouth is full.

If you speak to your hv they will send him for another hearing test, just to cancel that out. They can also refer him onto a speech and language therapist, although they may decide he's too young - mine wouldn't work on ds until he turned three - it gets him into the system for SLT.

My ds was the same with delayed speech and very hard to understand, even at four in nursery, his teacher had problems making him out. It's a work in progress. At five we are still seeing the SLT every month/couple of months for pronounciation of certain sounds and he gets work to do at home. There has been a huge improvement in his speech though and it doesn't stop him as he never shuts up now.

Yes, another hearing test would be appropriate.
There's a chance that something could have changed since he was a baby.
