Update on YG's DD2

Took DD2 to see our GP this afternoon.
She has so much cattarh (sp) in her ears that her ear drums are opaque (should be translucent).
The inside of her nose is infected, hence the massive nosebleed last week.
So we are back on the mega antibiotics.
The cattarh could be causing hearing problems which may then be contributing to the behaviour issues. It is possible it is a type of glue ear, but that can't be diagnosed fully until she has had the antibiotics and the doctor sees her again to check if the cattarh is still there. So for now, who knows.

Oh poor wee thing! And poor you - we always knew when dd had an ear infection brewing becasue her behaviour went completely doolally. Hope the anti-bs work swiftly.

poor little thing, my ds had this and of course he couldnt hear properly so it delayed his speech. he has recovered from it now after treatment with long term anti-biotics, however, they generally like to try a diff approach now and use a nasal spray to shrink back the lining of the nose, thus releiving the inflammation in the eustachian tube, allowing the glue to drain away.
has she been referred to an ENT?

so sorry to hear this but at least you have an explanation-did you see my post on the orinigal thread at 10.16 suggesting ear infection. It is my second diagnosis in 2 days ( also diagnosed mollusucum \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=158817&stamp=060326195852\here})Perhaps this could be a new line of work for me??
Seriously hope the antibiotics kick in asap

the reason I dismissed an ear infection originally was because we had seen the emergency doctor and he said that altho her ears were a bit red there wasn't a problem.
good diagnosis tho Smile

as she is so young then there is every chance that as she gets older and her eustachians tubes expand the problem will go away and not re-ccur, however if she continues to have glue ear and infections they may want to insert grommets, but my ds2 had treatment for glue ear from 18 months onwards and seems genearally quite well, hes now 5 and has only had one more ear infection since.

sometimes ear infections get missed in the early stages as the infection is lower down in the erustachian tube to start with and then creeps up towards the ear drum, also some doctors dont like to prescribe anti-biotics for ear infections now as in a child with clear eustachian tubes the infection will just drain away and pain killers will suffice. however in your dd's case the glue is probably what harboured the infection and naturally it cant drain away.

DD has the gunkiest ears.. As soon as she gets any infection, she always has earache. She has had a burst eardrum too. You have my sympathies, YG, poor lamb, ear infections are the pits.

have been sitting here worrying this evening. I hope the antibiotics clear this. But then if they don't we have to start ENT appointments and all that.

Hey, make sure she's getting some probiotics if she's having antibiotics in case her horrible nappy rash comes back.

Oh no. At least you have a diagnosis to work from.

I may be talking out of the top of my hat here but, i gather cows milk and associated produce aggravate sinus/catarrh related things.....not that i want to start another cows milk/heather MM thing again.....

I asked my GP about that but she said DD2 was not showing enough of a reaction through her nose etc to suggest that

oh poor little monkey! but at least you know what it is now.
and even if she does have glue ear then she can be treated and you know what it is

Ohhh, YG, have just seen this - poor little DD2, no wonder she keeps being ill! Sad

Don't they do grommets any more? They might be the answer, given her age and medical history. DS1 had them at c 18 months, bounced right back from the surgery and anaesthetic and was much more cheerful afterwards.

we'll see how she is once the ten day course of abs are finished. If it is looking like they would be a good idea then that's what we'll do.
Did DD1 tell you about her screaming? Especially at 3am one morning for 40 minutes without stopping? Sad
