popsycal and I had a fun chat on someone else's thread (sorry about that) about the strange words our kids say and how hard it is to decipher them and I wondered if anyone else wanted to join in. My daughter's word for the day has been:

tudah (sort of pronounced cheewdaahh)

we truly have no inkling what it means.

We have 'nhg' too, also added to the front of words, i.e. 'nhgedden' 'nhgnadden' which seem to be just nice sounds to make rather than about anything specific though you never know.

buzzybee, how did you work out that 'nhg' meant sheep?!

My ds calls Pizza Hut 'Peepee Huh'.

popsycal · 01/01/2004 22:20

awwwh my ds has started saying maaaameeee today instead of mama
he also did tikka (sticker)
the funniest thing today is that he has recently started copying me when i say 'oh'
so i have been playing a game where i say it in different ways and he copies itin the same way
then i said 'aaaaaaargh; and when he said it he did a big burp whilst saying the word....
i nearly wet myself and ds cried!!!

Hulababy · 02/01/2004 10:24

eeeek!!

Evita · 02/02/2004 20:53

How exciting, Popsycal!

We're sort of in the middle of a flurry of new words but none of them make sense to us yet. I think her little fond 'boghbah' for grandma is rather sweet. But often she looks at me and says something so clearly and definitely but I haven't a clue what she means ...

Think yours is a bit older though, no? We're just now at 15.5 months.

Popscal - we have Mumsnet Twins ! my DS2 is 18 months tomorrow!!
Are you in "geordieshire" as dh always calls it? I was born there, but live in the SE now...

popsycal · 02/02/2004 22:36

i am in geordieshire!!!!!
wow!!! a mumsnet twin!!
do you hace a ds or dd!!??
am very excitied!!

popsycal · 02/02/2004 22:36

oh dear you already said a ds!!!
where abouts are youfrom??

Evita · 04/02/2004 16:15

News flash!!

Dd has started to say 'eye' very carefully and seriously and perfectly while pointing at my eyes, or any of her toys eyes. I think it's a kind of cool 1st clear word to have.

Yesterday I met the weirdest girl. She's 5 days older than dd, so almost 16 months and was saying, literally, whole sentences clearly and precisely. Short ones like 'Look at the bricks mummy'. It was absolutely spooky and absolutely captivating. Her mom was freaked out too.

My ds is 14mths old and will say arrh gon, which of course is 'all gone'. hat is the only thing that i can understand at the mo. When my dd1 was little she used to call wet wipes 'fob wipes', haven't a clue where she got it from but me and dp would say to each other in the supermarket 'do we need any fob wipes' . My dd2 who is 4 calls a catolouge a codiet, haven't a clue why

Northerner · 04/02/2004 16:42

Gosh, all your kiddies are doing very well. My ds is 22 months and here are some of my favourites:

muk - milk
bush - bus
beebies - c beebies
truttt - truck

He does pronounce some words perfectly, including SHIT which seems to be his favourite. When playing I often hear him muttering, 'oh no shit' to himself!

popsycal · 04/02/2004 18:49

glad we are not the only one with a swearing baby!!!

SenoraPostrophe · 04/02/2004 19:09

I love baby words!

DD says "iya" (I think hiya, but the Spanish think it's hola)

Plus for the last few months she's been saying mummummyummy which I thought was a whingy way of saying mummy, but it turns out she's saying "mia mia" (Spanish for "mine mine" ). Must have learned that at nursery.

She also says gogu, which means bottle or yogurt, depending on how she says it.

popsycal · 04/02/2004 19:12

oh SP - for yoghurt, ds says
crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
a really gutteral gaggle!!!

Evita · 04/02/2004 21:16

dd also now says 'crook' for crayons, 'courk' for walk, and 'cookah' for cooker.

funny what use they make of their limited vowels and consonants.

The thing I like the best is that weird 'Japanese' sounding gabble they do. Dd just stands looking at me and goes sort of 'encoydecoydecoydecoydedede' etc. and seems as though she really knows what she means. It's very sweet. Like a little report about something.

OP posts:
popsycal · 04/02/2004 21:19

every crayon is lellow

and all cars now go neee norrrrr neeeenorrr after getting police car at xmas!!!

hello is very clear now - he shocked the childminder today 9whom he calls grandma btw!!!)

bobthebaby · 04/02/2004 22:19

"cack cack" is duck for my ds.

bobsmum · 05/02/2004 09:58

Strange one now...ds is standing next to me as I flick up and down Active conversations and is calling the girl in the Boden advert to the left of the screen "grampa" - what does this say about how he sees my dad?!? (he's nearly 17 mths btw)

bobsmum · 05/02/2004 09:58

ds that it, not my dad..

Northerner · 05/02/2004 10:04

Just to continue from the swearing baby bit. Last night when I picked up ds from nursery, the supervisor pointed out to me (took me in a corner and said i a whisper) 'he's been saying S H I T today' She didn't say it but spelled it out, asif it was a really BAD word. I was mortified and didn't know what to say, but must admit to peeing myself laughing all teh way home.

Well I'm off to the bad Mothers club then .................
