popsycal and I had a fun chat on someone else's thread (sorry about that) about the strange words our kids say and how hard it is to decipher them and I wondered if anyone else wanted to join in. My daughter's word for the day has been:

tudah (sort of pronounced cheewdaahh)

we truly have no inkling what it means.

all photographs are also mama no matter who they are of!!!

fisil · 31/12/2003 18:47

I can't wait, we have some very exciting months to come.

DS says "gak" if he sees a bird. It started as a noise that ducks make, but seems to be applied to any creature with a beak. He even points at gardens and says "gak" even thought there are no birds there. So we assume he means "if there were any birds about, I imgine that is where we would see them."

DP is also convinced he says Dada. Not so sure. He babbles Dadada when happy and Mumumum through his tears. Hmmm. I think it's all coincidence!

popsycal · 31/12/2003 18:57

ds has been waving his hand around madly - like a wave but at a rapid pace - when we read a prticular nursery rhyme book - havnet been able to fathon this one out for ages!!!
then today. he started waving his hand for no reason....ran and got the book, frantically turned the pages uuntil he got to the page he wanted and waved his hand even more frantically!!
it was five little ducks and he was doing the action that i do for that nursery rhyme!!
so a waving hand means 'duck'!!

fisil · 31/12/2003 19:06

Sweeeeeeeet!

Can you work out for me why ds makes a clicking sound with his tongue on the opening pages of "Oh Dear" (especially the sheep page, although the cow got it tonight too)?

popsycal · 31/12/2003 19:06

ds does that for a horse....does she do it for horse could it just mean a general animal???

popsycal · 31/12/2003 19:07

oh - sorry i meant does HE...etc etc

fisil · 31/12/2003 19:09

Well, I keep turning to the horse page and making the same noise really obviously, but he doesn't join in. Maybe someone did it once for the horse and he's forgotten which page (or maybe I read it to him with spinach stuck between my teeth that I was trying to suck out)?

popsycal · 31/12/2003 19:11

rofl at spinach!!!
at the moment also (whilst we are on the subject of inane uternaces..)
ds made liek a gutteral sound in the back of histhroat when he wants to say something that he has no word for
so milk and yoghurt and chair and grandad are
'crrrrrrrrrch'
oh and he has started gargleing with his drinks!!!

fisil · 31/12/2003 19:14

Bet Grandad is happy with that. How old is ds?

popsycal · 31/12/2003 19:16

almost 17 months now!!!
and yours?

fisil · 31/12/2003 19:27

popsycal · 31/12/2003 19:31

fisil · 31/12/2003 19:32

11th

popsycal · 31/12/2003 19:33

happy bday for then!!!
my curry is arriving soon...join me in the bar later if you are around!!!
keep posting!

fisil · 31/12/2003 19:34

See you later!

jessmack · 31/12/2003 20:51

just remembered one! It is not something dd (30 months) says, but something she has misheard/misunderstood for as long as I can remember.
If you say something along the lines of "Shut the door, there is a big DRAUGHT coming in" she thinks you are saying there is a GIRAFFE coming in! She looks worried, and shuts that door so quickly, glancing around her in a panic!
I have explained it to her, but nope, a giraffe it is!

Evita · 31/12/2003 21:07

Well, we were incredibly impressed today, my daughter pointed at her yellow triangle in her shape sorter and uttered 'twangle.' Cool, huh?

Ghosty · 31/12/2003 21:39

My DS is now 4 years old and speaks very clearly so I don't have to detangle any of it any more but there are two words that he just can't get right and I don't want to correct him as he sounds so sweet ...
They are
ElephLant ...
and SNawich ...

marthamoo · 31/12/2003 21:43

DS1 is 7 in March and still can't say remember (berember) or sausages (doddigis). It's so cute

Oakmaiden · 31/12/2003 21:44

I used to love my son (not so long ago - so aged about 4/5) talking about snignal boxes at the railway....

marthamoo · 31/12/2003 21:45

And my two year old yells "f*k! f*k!" but I think he means fork

buzzybee · 31/12/2003 21:49

We have just been to a farm. When dd's (21 months) father came to pick her up she was very excited to tell him about the "go" and the "nhg" (imagine a nasal sound). Actually I was impressed with her memory of feeding the sheep (goat is much easier to say!) with a bottle of milk!
I think all kids up to about 2 pick on one word to be the generic for lots of words. DD's almost first word was duck/quack and she used this for all animals for a while, then started distinguishing other animals such as cat while duck remained generic for birds. She has recently learned the word for bird but is still a little confused about ducks also being birds!

popsycal · 31/12/2003 23:44

buzzybee - we also have 'nhg'!!!
