How long does it take for toddlers to walk after their first steps?

Hi all, just a quickie. My daughter is 15 months and took four steps yesterday which my dh and I were so excited and thrilled about. I was just wondering how long is it after they do that does the real walking come? I'm so excited I just can't wait until she walks :)

Well, my son took two or three steps at 11 months. Then proceeded to pretend this had never happened.

Then at 13 months, he was off nursery for the day. Stood up and walked the entire length of the garden. Then the house. Then the park. He has never sat down since.

He went from refusing to take steps to walking about 40 steps in one day. I think it was a confidence thing. So it could be immediate or a few weeks!

It's so exciting.

It is exiting! I cannot wait until she decides today is the day. I just want to let her run around the park and really enjoy herself. Not to mention all her trousers are getting really dirty on the knees from crawling. I can't wait!! Eeeeek lol :)

Mine dd was walking within a month of her taking her 2st steps.

It is lovely letting them run around in the park but also bloody exhausting! (Grins)

It was more than 2 months with one of mine...

about 5 minutes now he can outrun both dh and me!!

My DD took her first steps at 16mo but she was just turned 18mo before she was walking properly.

A couple of months for my DS but he was an early walker. I think he was pushing the boundaries of what he could really do so took a while to get the balance to do it consistently. I think when they start later they are probably quicker to take off with it.

DEpends on the child - different with each of my 3. One took a couple of steps, but was weeks and weeks before it developed into anything more. Another was walking fulltime (as it were) from the day they took their first step.

Two weeks (just under 15.5 mo first steps, 16 mo minus one week tottering about 20 yards) - and I'm with you on the trousers! I have had to throw away so many shredded at knee pairs.

PS You have a routine, naps and whinging thread, don't you cupcake? I think just before taking a big step (as it were) like learning to walk or crawl is classic whingeathon time - certainly was with my DD. She has been so much happier the last few days after a couple of weeks of being really quite annoying (surely not).

Yes I do have those other threads. I think my dd is a little frustrated she can't walk or get out of her pram when we r out ( like most toddlers). If she walked now I could pop her on some reins and she could stretch her legs. I got so excited and she hasn't even attempted another step. It's like waiting for Christmas lol

She now seems to not even want to stand up :( I guess I should put those four steps to the back of my mind because I'm not sure she will try for another month or so probably. Damn lol. Being nearly 6 months pregnant it would b really handy if she could walk and I would have to carry her so much. Oh well. Hopefully by Christmas :)

It definitely depends on the child.

My DC1 was very cautious, it was 2-3 months after her first steps that she finally "let go".

DC2 was up and about the same week.
