4 year old nightmare to take out

Our son is a nightmare to take shopping, he runs off, hides, pretends he doesn't know us, throws tantrums,if he doesn't get what he wants (and I don't give in) and its becoming a real trauma every time we go, not sure what to try next,
If we walk off he couldn't care less

Any advice ???

Ds used to be like this. He was fine once he started to read as he'd take a book out with him. Shopping is very boring, can you play some games with him (or order online)? Give him a shopping list, even with pictures, so he has something to focus on, and a reward at the end for a job well done?
