Hi,

I am concerned that my newborn is not eating enough. I am bottle feeding her. I make up the formula exactly how it says on the box. She has only ever eaten 2 full bottles in one sitting. On normal days she picks at the milk having 1 fl oz or 2 fl oz at one time. She can practically go the whole night by onyl waking once and eating 1 fl oz.

In total she can have about 15 fl oz - 20 fl oz on a good day. The health visitor didn't seem to be very confident about this issue when I spoke to her so does anyone have any good advice?

Is she pooing enough? Is she weeing enough? Is she putting on reasonable amounts of weight? If it's yes to all three, then yes, she's eating enough. As an EBFer I haven't the faintest idea how much my DS takes in - all I can do is observe the output. No different with FFing. Smile

Babies are programmed to take little and often, they only have tinny tummies.

If she wetting and pooing fine and your HV is happy then is ok. Don't know about formula amounts a breastfed but i'm sure some one else can answer that one.

Have you had your 6 week GP check? A they mite be able to help.

Have you tried changing the formula? They do taste different. My dc had definite preferences. Ds hated Aptamil but was quite happy with Cow & Gate, for example.

It is really hard with your first baby to relax,
I worried a lot with my dd, I was sure she wasn't getting enough. I bf so had no clue what she was having. But, after a while you realise as long as there is loads of wet nappies and poos, and they are gaining weight, then there is nothing to worry about. Try to relax, you would know if there was something very wrong. Sounds like you are doing a great job xxx
