Hi, im an experienced(ish) mum with four DC my youngest are a set of twins 5months however they both have the habbit of stuffing either their fingers or whole hand into their mouths. They both have dummies as they were sucky babies and i didnt want them to suck their fingers however this is different. They will pull out their dummies to bite their fingers, their not sucking their fingers but biting i know its probably a sign og teething however they push their fingers so far into their mouths that they throw up.
Any suggestions to get them to stop, they end up smelling something awful from all the throwing up and need constanting topping up. What toys/ aids can i get to stop/reduce this habit. They have the sleep suits with the scratch mittens they just work at them until finger get free also they dont wear slepsuits ll the time any more.

Don't know but would love to hear of anyone else's experiences. My DS did this but would only gag, never throw up. It soon passed and hope it does for you too.

My DS and it doesn't bother me, or him obviously since he keeps doing it! Admittedly he just gags and has only made himself vom a couple of t

Oh, blasted phone! 'A couple of times' that was meant to say. Oral exploration, especially of hands and feet, is a very important developmental strategy so I've tried not to discourage it by using a dummy or scratch mitts. It's also supposed to be useful for self-soothing when you're not there to stick a dummy in - I have yet to experience this however. DS cannot comprehend self-soothing, even remotely. It is a bit odd when he tries to stuff his fist or fingers in his mouth at the same time he's on the boob...Smile

And that first sentence should say 'My DS does it'. Gah! One handed smart phone use while BFing and sleep deprived. Should be a law against it...

My DD (14 weeks) is exactly the same!! Dummy in plus 2-3 fingers or dummy out and whole fist in!! She also gags/coughs when fingers get too far down but it doesn't stop her from shovelling her whole hands back in there!!!! Smile HV said she is showing signs of teething!! It comforts her so I'm happy I just regularly give her hands a quick wipe with a baby wipe to keep them clean(ish)

what about seeing if they will chew on something else like a teether off some sort DS loved a cool damp face cloth.

I have tried giving them teething rings, their not interested. The finger chewing is quite cute but the vomit not so much. I hope they grow out of it.

My ds did this pretty much from birth. He got all four front teeth in one go about four weeks ago. He is now 11 months old. It used to worry me a little when he gagged, but there was no point trying to stop him. He'd take his dummy out to do it too. Eventually he stopped doing it as much. He now puts his fingers in his mouth to feel the weird sensation of having teeth Grin. His two canines are about to make an appearance any day soon. Thank goodness he's only had a cough/cold and nothing else. 6 teeth in almost as many weeks could've been a trauma.
