hi I'm a tad concerned at dd2 (13 months) not walking yet- she stands and does 4 steps mac with encouragement but just doesn't seem
bothered.

dd1 walked at 10 months, I've been told walking age is inherited so I'm
flummoxed! any tips?

Just try to relax! 10 months is early for walking and 13 still verging on early. They are all different.

rabbitstew · 02/09/2012 08:27

Don't be flummoxed at 13 months. It's not inherited to the precise month and 13 months is a good 5-9 months off being considered late.

PacificDogwood · 02/09/2012 08:29

DS1 walked at 10 months.
DS2 walked at 17 months.
DS3 and 4 walked at @ one year.

4 steps sounds good to me?
13 months is not 'late walking' btw.

My DS didn't walk till 16 months. His gross motor skills (walking, running, climbing) are now fabulous. He can dribble and kick a football etc as well as the next toddler at 22 months. You really wouldn't be able to tell who walked first out of him and his peers, even though he was the latest. Anything up to 18 months is absolutely fine.

TheTermagantToaster · 02/09/2012 08:31

Meant to say, even over 18 months it's not necessarily a problem!

breadandhoney · 02/09/2012 08:34

DD was almost 23 months before she walked and is now running everywhere at 2.2. Doctors won't raise an eyebrow before age 2. So relax. They're all different Smile DD wasn't even bum shuffling til 15 months (she never crawled)

MrsHelsBels74 · 02/09/2012 08:36

My son was 15 months before he walked independently. Had been cruising for months but just wasn't ready to take that last step. Now he rarely stops moving!

libelulle · 02/09/2012 08:38

13 months is early walking, not late!!! My ds didn't walk until nearly 2. He's a very active, sporty, coordinated toddler. Relax - there is enough to worry about with small children without conjuring extra imaginary difficulties!

TheOneWithTheHair · 02/09/2012 08:39

Ds1 13 months
Dd 10 months
Ds2 9 months

There's a 4 month difference between my first and last.

A friends dd didn't walk until 22 months. She's absolutely normal and fine.

jubilee10 · 02/09/2012 08:44

Ds1 - 10 months
Ds2 - 16 months
Ds3 - 15 months

They are all different.

hazeyjane · 02/09/2012 08:48

Honestly 13 months is not late walking!!

blondieminx · 02/09/2012 08:49

My DD didn't walk till 16 months and like mrshelsbels's DS, she now rarely sits still! Grin

CoteDAzur · 02/09/2012 08:58

DD started walking at 18 months but only if someone stood her up. She never crawled and didn't pull up, only managed to stand up on her own at 22 months Shock She is now 7 and is perfectly fine.

DS didn't crawl, either. He managed to pull up and walk at 15 months. He is now 3 and runs everywhere.

I walked at 9 months, so can't say walking age was inherited in our case.

SilkieChicken · 02/09/2012 09:03

20 months for DD, DS was 14 months. I don't think it's inherited and if so would it be related to both parents?

FWIW DD when she did start walking progressed really quickly.

Whiteshoes · 02/09/2012 09:12

Ah, don't worry! Mine only walked at 15 months and now (just hitting the grand old age of 16 months) wants her hand held all the time again. The other babies we see aren't walking much either. But you do seem to hear about the early walkers more, don't you?

buggyRunner · 02/09/2012 11:46

thanks guys! I kept thinking it was because she hasn't had as much 1 on 1 time as dd1- I feel better now Grin

I have never heard that 'walking age' is an inherited thing...

IME you cannot stop a baby intent on walking and you cannot make a baby walk whatever you do Grin.

Tgger · 02/09/2012 21:09

16 months, and 18 months Grin

JavaFee · 03/09/2012 11:31

16 months here, so don't worry. My doc says that as long as you see a continuous progress it is all OK.

StarMeKitten · 03/09/2012 15:42

Average age for walking is 14 months and your DD looks like she's not far off it. Relax :-)

firawla · 03/09/2012 15:43

13 months is not late, its still below average! and your dd has done 4 steps you say - nothing to worry about at all i would be pretty sure

SilkInsideAChestnutShell · 03/09/2012 15:50

Dd started walking at 18mo. She went from completely unable/disinterested to running around the beach seemingly overnight.

Fuzzymum1 · 03/09/2012 16:07

None of mine have walked by 13 months. They walked took their first wobbly steps at 17, 18 and 14 months.

lljkk · 03/09/2012 16:10

DC have a cousin who walked at 22 months. He's as fast a runner as mine who all walked 9-11 months.

Be grateful. Early walking babies just get into mischief that much sooner, before they have any sense.

FunnysInLaJardin · 03/09/2012 16:12

sounds fine to me DS1 was 14 months and DS2 was 9 months. Glad it was that way round though!
