Are all 3 months old babies sleeping but mine?

Hi,
I am just after a bit reassurance .... I know that a lot of mums, if not exactly lie, slightly exaggerate. However, it's a bit much now and I hear "everybody" raving about the sleeping habits of their DC and I am wondering if only my ebf son isn't sleeping longer than 3 or 4 hours in one go at night and starting the day between 5 and 6 am?

I usually feed at 7, 11pm, 2am and 5.30am ....

DS is 14 weeks and on the 9th percentile (if this makes a difference).

How about your ones?

:) Thali

Well ds definitely wasn't . Was doing a 10pm, 3am and 6am so pretty much the same as you. He was sleeping 7 till 7 by 7mo so things change fast.

teacher123 · 08/08/2012 10:49

Nope! On a good day DS 14 weeks goes to sleep around 6.30, then wakes around 11.30, 2.30 and 5... He always comes in with me at the 5am feed and we snooze together to anywhere between 6.30am and on a really good day 8am! If he goes to sleep later he usually misses out the 11.30 one... All my friends are claiming their babies sleep through. I think they're lying...

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 08/08/2012 12:09

It's silly that it's somehow become a badge of proficient parenting. Of course we all want to sleep and no-one wants a 2 yr old who's not sleeping through but there is a lot of middle ground. Ds was still having a 4am feed at 7mo and my hv, who was fab, told me to try to get him to drop it. It took 2 nights and we were done so I reckon when you start thinking its prob just habit vs hunger, that's the time to see if you can persuade them.

Anchorwoman · 08/08/2012 12:45

Dd has exactly the same feed times as you OP, she is ff and 21 weeks. She started to go through 7 hours at night when she was 12 weeks and then, after we got really excited about having decent sleeps again, she promptly regressed and has settled into this routine pretty much like clockwork.

I'm feeding on demand so resigned to it for now but if she's still doing it after 6 months we may have to have words with her!

MamaBear17 · 08/08/2012 13:10

My one year old first slept through the night at 8 months, since then she probably sleeps through once or twice a week. The other nights she wakes once. She is usually up between 5-6am!

jaggythistle · 08/08/2012 13:22

mine is 16 weeks old and is up an average of twice between 11 and 7 I'd say. sometimes 3 times, or like last night only once at 4.30 then slept till 7 Shock (he's slept past 4 about 3 times)

mostly up between 2 and 3 then 5 ish.

DS1 slept through regularly at 10ish months i think...

Rhubarbgarden · 08/08/2012 17:19

Mine was up three times in the night till I switched him to formula. Then he started sleeping through from the 10.30 feed till anything between 5.30 and 6.30. Drastic measure but needed my sleep with a 2 year old and 3 month old. {aware I will probably get flamed}

jaggythistle · 08/08/2012 18:18

not flamed but it's no guarantee!

I'm certainly on Facebook at the same time as my ff friend during the night Grin

JeewizzJen · 08/08/2012 19:31

My 13mo wakes every 3-4 hours...always has always will

Thaleia · 08/08/2012 20:30

phew - although not great, it's reassuring that it's not just us :)

My dd was formula fed because bf failed and it made no difference. However, my dd never took a decent amount of milk so I think she needed topping up more regularly. No answers, but it does get better! x

phlossie · 08/08/2012 21:07

Thalia - that doesn't sound bad at all for 14 weeks! My ds is, erm, 20-something weeks (I've lost count! 2 weeks off 6mo) and has just started doing 7pm-1am-4am-7am - up until then he was a 2-3hours between each feed, and before that 1-2hours. Onwards and upwards!

phlossie · 08/08/2012 21:07

I mean Thaleia!

AntsMarching · 08/08/2012 21:17

My dd2 is 12weeks and sleeps 8.30-5.30 and has done for the last four weeks or so. She's breastfed and isn't good about napping in the day.

My dd1 (now 2) at 12weeks slept in 3-4 hour blocks at night. She was breastfed and an excellent napper in the day.

All babies are different, but they all eventually get there. Sometimes it does feel like it'll never end, but it will.

TeaandHobnobs · 08/08/2012 21:27

Almost identical - DS is 15 weeks today (7 weeks corrected), between 9th and 25th percentile, EBF, and can manage 11:30 to 2:30, then to 5:30 if I am very lucky, but often earlier. And it's only this past week he has got there - before that it was 2 hour gaps only (exhausting).

Several of my contemporaries have babies sleeping between 5 to 9 Shock hours at night, and everytime they say it, I die a little inside Sad

BeattieBow · 08/08/2012 21:35

my dd is nearly 13 weeks. Her first sleep of the night will now last for a 6 hour stretch (which can start any time from 8-10pm, but used to start at midnight) and she has done this from 6 weeks. she once slept for 8 hours (I was surprised to be woken up for the first time in daylight!).

I thought this was pretty good, until I read that thread on here yesterday asking when your bf baby first slept through the night.

VerityClinch · 08/08/2012 21:48

"no-one wants a two year old who's not sleeping through"

I've got a 20 month old who isn't. Sad

His big sister slept through from 12 weeks. When she was six months we figured "this is easy, what's all the fuss about" and bang, I was pregnant again.

The last 20 months have been payback for my initial smugness in a BIG WAY.

MacMac123 · 08/08/2012 22:03

They are lying. Had a friend who was a classic 'they just sleep right through' bore. Was total bullshit. It turned out she counted midnight to 5 as sleeping through and when I stayed there the kid was up at 2 anyway (at about 18 months).
Some may get lucky and have sleepers but there is a lot of exaggeration that goes on in this domain!!
(mine didn't sleep through until 5 months and even then was unpredictable. Bouts of sleeping through and just when you think you've cracked it, they start waking again)
Mine now 3 and can sleep from 7.30 to 8. Equally can wake because he has wet the bed, got scared of dark, has lost his blanket, had a dream etc!)

jaggythistle · 08/08/2012 23:21

precisely that macmac!

my oldest is nearly 3 and he was up at 3am complaining he needed his lamp on just when his little brother was doing his biggest sleep ever! touch wood DS1 is normally great, 8 ish to 7 but it was erratic on the way as you describe. all going great, virus - up all night again, then teething molars, then a cold etc etc.

i was just glad to be bf him to soothe him and settle him when he was older!

Fletch1 · 09/08/2012 15:04

It's all lies! My DD is 4 now and has only just in the last 6 months started sleeping right through! And even then that's from about 8pm until between 5&6.

HappyAsASandboy · 09/08/2012 15:39

"no-one wants a two year old who's not sleeping through"

My DTs are 21 months old and still waking at 11pm, sometime in the early hours and then up for the day at 6am ish. I definately still want both of them, and will if they're still waking that often in 3 months time!

NoSleepforAYear · 09/08/2012 16:01

Some people seem to be really lucky, but most are lying!!
My DD turned 1 this week, and until last week woke me 4-6 times every night. Having a teenager studying for GCSE's in the house I'd always jumped as soon as she made a sound and with her being smallish (between 9th-25th centile) felt she needed to be fed if she was asking for it.
2 weeks ago my eldest went away and we tried a variation on the controlled crying that we'd tried before. 5 days later she slept through from 8pm to 6am and we've now had 7 out of the last 8 nights with sleep. I don't know what to do with myself with all this spare time!!!!
They'll always get there in the end :)

(at around 5 months I was up with her every hour for 15mins)

Fishpond · 09/08/2012 21:45

.

blossombath · 09/08/2012 21:54

I also dislike the way sleep patterns are seen as some parenting badge, and think people start claiming their LO sleeps through when the LO has randomly slept through for a few days or a week. They aren't so keen to talk about things if the child regresses or changes their sleeping habits.

OP your nightly wakings sound entirely like mine at 14wo, and indeed now at nearly 6MO. Your friends are lucky or lying, but they are no better at parenting than you.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 10/08/2012 07:27

If it is a badge, I think I'm gonna fail with DD (9 days old). Feeds every 2 hours day and night. Sleeps all day. Dozes (noisily) at night. Cannot adjust her for the life of me (she just cannot stay awake in the day) so have basically given up. If she's still nocturnal when she starts school i'll call the sleep consultant Grin
