My daughter is three months old and I don't really need to do it now, unless I've noticed a big big gulp. Grin

i think 16 weeks is what i was told.

However, babies are all different. :)

They learn to self burp when their chest muscles get stronger. Both my children did this at wildly different ages. It's time consuming but it's better than them throwing up on you!

I think I was a round the 6 month mark but mine had terrible reflux and we had to be very careful to make sure tummy was well settled.

I stopped when he started belching of his own accord which is down to their tummy muscles developing so will vary from child to child.

When they start doing it deliberately at the dinner table for laffs.

dunno.

it kind of phased out.

when DD could burp for herself, I suppose. but it just kind of happened.

i still rub her back when she's crying randomly though.

I don't remember exactly when but at a certain point they'll start burping by themselves. For the longest time I still did put DS upright after feeding (but wouldn't pat him or 'burp' him as such) as he wouldn't be able to burp if he was lying down. Then from about 1y/o I've noticed him burping while lying down.

I'm still burping my 16 month old [groan]

Mich100 · 31/07/2012 12:33

I never burped my ds. He just wouldn't do it. Now he is 9.5 mths he does it himself occasionally. Mind you I can't burp either, never have.

MamaBear17 · 31/07/2012 19:59

I only burp my 1 year old after the last bottle at night. However, It is mostly so that I can lay her on my chest and get an extra cuddle Smile

DD is a reflux baby and I still burp her at 15 months.

NapaCab · 01/08/2012 04:25

Usually it's when they can start to sit up more and the wind can come up by itself, I think.

That's what happened with DS anyway. I had to spend YEARS (it seemed) burping him after feeding and then once he started to sit up on his own around 5 months and got more mobile generally, I just didn't need to anymore. All I needed to do was sit him down after feeding and he would have a couple of burps by himself. What a relief!!

Never did it after a midwife told me you can't actually do anything to bring up a burp - they burp when they're going to regardless.
