bitting and bobbing / generally fretting with feeds - 12 week old, advice please..

My 12 week old DC is combination BF and FF. Feeds have become a fretting anxious struggle with her boxing, crying, wriggling, pulling on/off, struggling to attach with BF or bottle and / or falling asleep after having hardly anything, then 10 minutes later wanting another feed. The only feed which goes smoothly is bizarrely the one in the night!?

Our day roughly goes
7am BF
10am BF
1pm FF - takes between 3 and 6oz
4pm BF
7pm FF - takes between 3 and 8oz
3/4 AM ish BF

The day times above have been sort of apposed by me when I noticed she was able to go 3 hours in an attempt for me to get some routine ( I also have DC1 21 months) and to try and establish a bedtime routine.

Have tried faster flowing teat for FF. She has no routine for daytime naps so not sure if she's maybe knackered and just falls asleep / fusses because she's over tired and doesn't get what she needs.

She is putting on weight but is under 25%tile

Any advice greatly appreciated or is just 'one of those things' for now that will improve with time?

Haven't really got any advice sorry, apart from try posting in the Breast & Bottle section, you might get some more responses.

Falling asleep and then wanting more after 10 minutes is pretty normal though in my small survey of 2dc

Has she been feeding well up to now? Is there any difference between her latch when she's on you and when she's on the bottle? (ie which seems easier for her?)

sausagesandwich · 26/07/2012 12:24

She's always not taken much in a feed and has been fussy with a bottle. Getting fussier with bottle though. Her latch is on/off with both. She can do it well though at times, just mostly not.

If she's not liking the bottle then you could try just bf-ing for a bit and see if that settles her down. Also 3 hours is quite a long stretch for 12 weeks old - maybe bring it down to every 2 and see how she goes. If she's getting famished in between she may be getting colicky which will make it uncomfortable for her when she does feed. She'll be building up to the 16 week growth spurt in a couple of weeks so you can expect her to start wanting more then anyway. Lots of babies do better with little and often - their stomachs are only the size of their own closed fist! You'll need to feed more often in the evening too.

i agree that 3 hourly sounds a bit long for 12 weeks.
if you can feed more often, then try that.
she might be getting hungry but not knowing how to tell you, and then being too hungry to feed (DD gets very fretful and can't feed properly when she's too hungry)

Thanks. I will try more often and see what happens..
