Could your 3.9 yr old read this?

Have put a photo on my profile of an excerpt from a book (a crap book thanks to FIL but that's a whole other story Grin).

I'm genuinely curious to know if your DC could read/have read this independently at around this age?

Ds1 could have. None of the others could though.

bigTillyMint · 24/07/2012 11:18

Neither of mine could have, but they are both very good readers now!

Indith · 24/07/2012 11:22

no way!

chipmonkey · 24/07/2012 11:40

BTW, ds1 is very bright but has ADD so despite his amazing early reading abilities, he is not doing all that well in school.Sad

EggsOvaryZee · 24/07/2012 12:05

Really, children reading at 3.9? How does that happen? DS adores books and was an early talker. He is 4.7 and cannot read.

What am I doing wrong'?!

Indith · 24/07/2012 12:11

Nothing wrong, they do it when they are ready.

Ds1 is 5 and a half, he can read very well now but could only just about recognise his name before reception. Dd is 3 and a half and starting to get the concept of sound and blending and if I could be arsed to sit down more often with her and play more structured sound games would be starting to read but she much prefers to snuggle up and have me read a book to her :)

EggsOvaryZee · 24/07/2012 12:20

I honestly didn't know that children could read this young. That is kind of amazing, isn't it?
DS starts school in Sept, and am happy to let him learn along with everyone else - fear he'll get super bored if he could do lots of things already - has real trouble not interrupting/stopping talking/waiting etc...
I'm actually worried about the fact he doesn't hold the pen/pencil the 'right' way TBH...

Dolallytats · 24/07/2012 12:29

Eggs, I'm glad you posted. I was starting to think my DS was way behind!!

DeWe · 24/07/2012 12:31

All of mine could have. If you look at the words there's very few that are actually difficult. Happiness is possibly the hardest word, or windowsill, both of which are compound words.

I don't think early reading means anything more than early reading. It doesn't set them up for life. The only thing it does mean is that they can read books that interest them at a young age, which may, in some cases, help their enjoyment of reading. If we go to the library all three of mine (11, 8 and 5yo) disappear off to read their books for an hour or two.

Ds wouldn't hold a pencil before he went to school, but was reading adult magazines about planes. That was because he was interested in the planes and couldn't see the point in writing ("I can do it on the computer, mummy")

Tiggles · 24/07/2012 15:40

DS1 yes (but I think he was hyperlexic as part of his autism).
DS2, he had no interest in reading until he was 4.7, but could now (end of reception 5.9).
DS3 is now 3.8 and knows a few letters, but can't blend yet, so absolutely no way.

thegreylady · 24/07/2012 15:47

My dd could have but not ds and none of my 9 dgc two of whom are apparently G&T according to primary schools.

idontknowwhattodonnnnnn · 24/07/2012 15:54

Dd could have ds couldn't have till just before his seventh birthday. Now both read very well

idontknowwhattodonnnnnn · 24/07/2012 15:55

Also has your ds had that book read to him a lot of times

DilysPrice · 24/07/2012 16:12

DD could read a fair amount at that age, simple words and sentences, and was reading solid books by the time she turned 5, but she couldn't have got through entire paragraphs and relatively long words like the ones in your excerpt - she'd have stumbled through bits with lots of help. I'd have thought it would be a very advanced 3.9 yr old who could read that page fluently sight unseen. (I could have done it but my mother was very very bored and isolated when I was two and had nothing else to do except teach me to read - I had a lot more options with DD).

You're not kidding about the dreadful prose though.

mrsbaffled · 24/07/2012 16:58

No. No way. DS1 was nearer 6 when he was reading a passage like that. DS2 is 4.5 now and can read cvc words, decoding slowly. I thought that was pretty advanced(!)

duchesse · 24/07/2012 17:12

I could have done (I started reading before 3) but none of my children read until they were 4. My mother says that I wanted to know, so she taught me.

whatinthewhatnow · 24/07/2012 17:15

god no! DS is 4.5 and can read his own name and a couple of letters (T and Z, S and lots of numbers) I'm with eggs.

I have never tried to teach him to read, I figure he'll get enough of that when full time school starts in sept (sob). We do hours and hours of 'reading' together (eg me reading and him following) and he spends lots of time looking at books and enjoying them, and is really looking forward to learning to read at school.

I do think reading is like speaking - all those mums showing off because their dc could say 100 words at 8 months old or whatever - it's all evened out now as far as I can see. Or walking, another hilarious boast - 'he can walk and he's only 10 months'. So what? Everyone will have forgotten in about 20 minutes.

jubilee10 · 24/07/2012 19:33

Why, can yours?

OddBodd · 24/07/2012 19:40

DS1 couldn't at 3.9 but at 4.5 he could easily. In my opinion they all catch up so by age 7 ish they are all fairly able to read at a similar level regardless of when they first could read.

Yourefired · 24/07/2012 19:42

No. It's about the level that my 6 year old can read with ease.

BeehavingBaby · 24/07/2012 19:44

Nope, pleased that DD1 who is 7 in September can read that well!

PS. Loved your photos Smile

BikeRunSki · 24/07/2012 19:48

No. DS is 3.10 and can recognise his name and about 10 letters. He thinks he can read when he remembers the words of a book he has had read to him a few times. He ' s v good at that, but then he has very little else to think about.

MigratingCoconuts · 24/07/2012 19:50

ditto my 7 year old dd!!

PoppyWearer · 24/07/2012 19:57

No.

Vagaceratops · 24/07/2012 20:02

DS1 would have had a good go, but would have needed help with bigger eords.
DS2 - no way
DD is 3.9 now and she wouldnt be able to do it.
