Could your 3.9 yr old read this?

Have put a photo on my profile of an excerpt from a book (a crap book thanks to FIL but that's a whole other story Grin).

I'm genuinely curious to know if your DC could read/have read this independently at around this age?

Neither DS nor DD could have at all. They both learned to read at school nursery a bit after they were 4.

I probably could have done at that age but tbh I was an only child then and my mum didn't work so had lots of time to encourage my slightly odd urge to do reading (and then when I felt I had done enough, maths at 4). Was pretty proficient at moderately complex arithmetic when I started school at 5, but really hasn't made too much difference to my life.

worrywortisworrying · 24/07/2012 20:34

Yes, my DS could. But ASD and I think that makes certain things easier and other things more difficult.

bigTillyMint · 24/07/2012 20:44

Worrywort, is your DS in Y7? - was it you who was trying to get him into a local lottery school? If so, what happened in the end? [nosey emoticon!]

worrywortisworrying · 24/07/2012 20:47

No, DS is 4 (just) and entering reception.

firawla · 24/07/2012 20:48

no. my ds started reading a few single words around that age, then the very easy type of reading like the little books on reading eggs eg i am sam, the rat sat etc etc. he's now just turned 4 and still wouldnt be able to read that page and tbh i didn't think he's too bad for his age so if a child read that page at 3.9 i think it is much higher skill than average

messtins · 24/07/2012 20:55

No. My DS was reading ORT level 3-4 before he started school at 4.11 and is now reading level 7 at school and bits of 12-13 at home at the end of YR. The expected level is 3 levels or book bands per school year so he is way ahead and at just 4 was only reading cvc words. You need to bear this in mind when choosing a primary school, ours has been brilliant with DS but I have friends with early adders at other schools who have had much less positive experiences and been really turned off reading, which is a real shame.

messtins · 24/07/2012 20:55

Early READERS

bigTillyMint · 24/07/2012 20:56

OhSmile -must have been a different worrywort!

BardOfBarking · 24/07/2012 21:05

No, my ds (4) can only read books which are predominantly phonetically plausible with very few digraphs eg

seeker · 24/07/2012 21:09

No.

But lots of people will tell you thir children can. For many people "reading" ="has book on table beside bed"

This carries on throughout school. Be warned.

Meglet · 24/07/2012 21:12

Good God, no! DD is 3.11 and can spot her name, knows a few letters and can tell whether it's 'push' or 'pull' on a door, which helps when I go blundering into one the wrong way.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 24/07/2012 21:20

No and my child is 4.8, i got her the Jolly Phonics cd which we play in the

car: when it comes to the part that says er er Mixer, she says *yuck yuck

Mixer* Grin.

rhetorician · 24/07/2012 22:21

dd is 3.6 and definitely couldn't; can't read at all - recognizes her name, her sister's name and cousin's name. Knows quite a few letters; can read the word 'yes' (had referendum, so it was festooned on every lamp-post), um, that's about it. Her cousin is nearly 4 and can read simple words and sentences with a bit of help, but couldn't read this. Why do you ask? I was a very good reader (had reading age of 14 at about 7/8) as a child and probably could have read this when I started school, just before my 5th birthday

MrsJamin · 24/07/2012 22:44

Is this thread just an excuse to gloat, OP, as you have gone very quiet?

blueglue · 24/07/2012 22:48

No way could either of mine have read that at 3.9.

I would think that text is approximately ORT level 7 and in general you might expect an average 6-7 yo to read that well. It contains tricky words, magic e words, long words etc.

My ds is 6 and he would read it fluently. My dd is 4.4 and she would have a stab at it - using phonic decoding and guesswork coupled with an extensive knowledge of the subject matter (from DVDs!).

rhetorician · 24/07/2012 22:56

same thread in Chat - OP's dd sounds like a very bright little girl :)

gomez · 24/07/2012 23:02

Not a fucking chance.

DD1 has been on staged intervention since end of P1, was doing Harry Potter by aged 6. Couldn't read before starting school. DD2 fluent by 5.5 - couldn't read before starting school. DS now doing Famous Five, 6 in October again couldn't read before school.

Your point?

gomez · 24/07/2012 23:04

Early reading / hot housing is no indicator of anything. Sorry meant to add that to earlier post.

notcitrus · 24/07/2012 23:24

Ds is 3.10 and could pick out a dozen words in that if he felt like it - last time I praised him for reading some words he replied "I can read some words. But I can't read ALL the other words." Every now and then he gets into words, so suspect next time they catch his interest he'll be away.

I could have read that at 3.9, but reading early hasn't really helped me in life.

BunnyLebowski · 25/07/2012 01:09

No, Mrs Jamin. Not an excuse to gloat. I also posted in Chat thinking that this board could be somewhat slow.

But since you ask. My family is DD, DP and me. Family are hundreds of miles away. None of our friends have kids. DD goes to her 15 hours of paid for childcare a week. I'm not there watching her.

I suspected my daughter was doing well for her age. As an MNer of 5 yrs plus I thought asking would be beneficial.

Keep projecting why don't you.

Thank you everyone for your informative answers Smile

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 25/07/2012 01:54

Bunny - if she can read that she's doing well :) There was a thread a while ago about 'young readers' and I was amazed by how many 'young readers' that MNers had - lots able to read things that before starting school - but compared to how many MNers children that there are, it was actually a very small minority. So I'd say she's doing really well, it's not the 'norm' but not G&T either... hope that helps?!

mathanxiety · 25/07/2012 02:09

DD1 and DD2 would have read it. DS would have had a fairly good stab at it.
The other two - no, not for about 9-12 months.

It really is an atrociously written book. A Disney publication?

mathanxiety · 25/07/2012 02:12

Your DD is gorgeous!

Saritabean · 25/07/2012 02:47

Would not expect a 3.9yr old to be able to read that!

But just for the record - isn't that Peter Pan... It's a brilliant story...???!!!!!! :)

Tinkerisdead · 25/07/2012 03:22

My dd is 3.8yr and she wouldnt read that. She knows all her letters phonically but hasnt moved on to 'oo' 'th' 'sh' type sounds so cant sound out or blend etc. my friend taught her daughter the same age, to read using word recogniton. She'd read that no problem.
