Major Meltdowns after residential school trip and Cub camp - normal or not?

DS2 (9, nearly 10) came back after 3 day school trip and had the most almighty meltdown.
Started as he got into the car, tears, shaking.. once home it escalated into anger/ lashing out/ him threatening to hurt himself (digging fingernails into himself). He hadn't slept well, and a boy in his room had been awake every night crying/homesick, which had disturbed him Sad.
I dismissed it as just a bad experience.

However he recently came back from Cub Camp, and a similar thing happened.
He does tend to get a bit overwhelmed in busy, loud, very boisterous environments, but I just wondered if this is normal, or whether I should be more worried/ seeking help.

As it is, I can't imagine him going on the 5 day school trip next year.

Anyone else's children react similarly?
