toenail biting

Hi all hope someone can help.

My ds1 is 4yo and bites his finger and toenails. Dh and I tell him to stop when we see him doing it, however it seems like he is compelled to do it as its mainly when hrs tired or concentrating on something else (in the same way thumb sucking can be).

Problem is, not only is this a disgusting habit, his big toe nails are now deformed and I'm concerned he will het an infection, ingrown toenail or both.

Does anyone have any suggestions to break this habit?

We have had similar and tried bribery - if she could manage not to bite her nails for a fortnight she would get a present. She managed it, got the present and went right back to biting again!

Now we're using Stop'n'grow, which seems to be working.

Is that the stuff that tastes vile? He has bitten his nails down a long way so do you know if it will sting? If not its going on today's shopping list.

Hi - sorry not to reply earlier. Yes, it tastes very bitter and it doesn't seem to sting. Good luck!
