should I be worried

ds,4 has always been a fantastic talker-very fluent, great vocab etc. over the last couple of days he is having trouble getting his words out-he says the start of a sentence over and over and over! now I have noticed that he has started to hit his mouth when he can't get his words out-he tells me it helps him say what he wants to say. He also said that one of the boys at school had said "hurry up" when he couldn't get his words out.
is this normal?, a phase? or should I be worried.

would you describe it as stuttering?

I'm pretty sure it's a common transient phase ,but I haven't had any experience of it myself.

We went through this something to do with the brain being 2 steps ahead of the mouth and some children speaking in a specific orderly way that makes the thought processes revert right back to the beginning of what they are trying to say.Seem to remember it lasting a couple of months at best.I work in reception class and see this quite a bit too-more in boys than girls!

thankyou thankyou-that sounds exactly like it-he does keep going back to the beginning of the sentence-then hits himself and is able to carry on!!!!!
