When did your son's voice break ?

DS is nearly 11, and been talking a lot lately about older boys at school whose voices have "broken", it just got me wondering, how exactly does it happen ? did your ds just wake up one morning and sounded like Barry White ? or was it more subtle than that, was it gradual and you didnt notice ? what's the average age it tends to happen ?

Both my sons were around 12, and were amongst the first in their years. Some of their friends were 16 or more before it happened.

I noticed a gradual lowering of their voices over a period of a few months. There was none of the embarrassing veering from bass to falsetto registers that I expected.

DS1 is 13 today, nothing has happened yet. Some of his Year 8 mates are like proper blokes.

are your ds's voices as just as deep as their dad's ? or it could be higher/lower ?

I have quite a deep voice and DS1 (11) often gets mistaken for me and visa versa - on the phone or in the next room. I bet he cant WAIT for his voice to break ...

Ds started in yr 6 and went completely in yr 7 when he was 12.

Shoul have said he had croakiness first and then when dd was away on school trip it went completely and the first thing she noticed when she got off the coach was Ds voice

He was 13, and singing the treble solo for Once in Royal at his school Christmas concert.

Apparently it was fine for the dress rehearsal, but on the day...

My Ds will be 14 in August and is depressed that he still has a high pitched voice. Laughs like a girrrrrl apparently!! so, not yet for him. Not sure my brothers ever broke, but he isn't girly in voice at all...

Well, the audience were kind, but he was a bit gutted!

Never mind. Three months later they were giving him tenor solos instead (and this is the kid I never thought would sing in tune).

15 for my DS. His voice just got gradually deeper over the course of a year- no squeaks. I did really miss his little boy voice when it all happened. I think it coincided with his growth spurt afair (he was a shortarse till 15).

My DS went to Barcelona for 3 days and came back with a deep voice

He needs one of those T-shirts that says "I went to Barcelona and all I got was a really deep voice"

I think he was about 13-14

He wasn't that bothetred, but think he was one of the first among his friends

MY DS1's voice broke at 12, and he started shaving. At 13 he is a huge hulking teenager, but still lovely

Ds is 13, it's starting to wobble.

Ds1 is 13.5, and i have noticed recently that his voice sometimes sounds very deep, then reverts back to his voice as i have known it. No squeakiness so far, but it looks like it is starting to happen. My friend has a ds aged 14, and his broke seemingly overnight, one minute he had a high pitched voice, the next he sounded like Barry White!

Ds was 12. He squeeked about for a wee while, mostly when agitated. But I put that down to a sore throat. Then one day I called up to him from the bottom of the stairs to get into the shower. A deep voice came back: Just getting in now mum". Dh and I looked at eachother in surprise and dh's first thought was Who is up there with him??? He now has a deep voice. Luckily for him he is the youngest in his school year and is surrounded by classmates up to 11 months older than him so the fact his voice has changed, his legs are hairy and he is in age 15-16 clothing is not too noticeable despite him still only being 12. Sob, where is my baby gone??

are there some boys whose voices just dont beak ? i wonder what David beckham must have sounded like as a boy.

12 I think - he started off sounding as though he had a sore throat and it was quite annoying really but now at 13.6 it's properly broken

Ds was just 12 I reckon . He too did the once in royal solo at Xmas I year 7 ( cathedral chorister) and sang alto for about 4 months then bass lol. Clearly the cathedral retired him at that point ( retired at 12.5, aww) .

He kept singing all through ( some say you should rest, but he's at a boys school where they do sing ).

By 14 ( so January year 9) he had a nice stable voice so auditioned for the local good adult choir ( DH heavily involved) and was their youngest ever member....still is the youngest at 16.

Interestingly watching the choristers some of them sing treble far longer than you'd imagine - 15 in the past ( not recently though) . You just know when they are " on the turn" they shoot up and gain vocal power for a matter of months then they're off!

Dont recall much squeaking. Probably because he has good vocal control filled Into him.

I'm very proud of him still singing. Teen boys don't as a rule bt the culture at school helps. He won the house music competition with 3 friends singing barbershop !

Gunz, it is funny now but at the time it did come as a bit of a shock

And yes, I think there are some whose voice never breaks. Dh is one. In fact his nickname is (and has been since he was in his early twenties, he is now 43) Squeeky. Because of his voice. Which made the early 'breakage' of ds's voice even more of a surprise...

Lancellottie that is so sad for your boy and his once in royal. Hope e stays a tenor - there just aren't enough about!
