2 year old biting nails at bedtime and naptime

DS has recently started biting his nails at bedtime. This coincided with a new routine - previously DH or I would sit with him until he slept but it all became rather protracted and I had DD to look after so DH changed things whereby he'd leave the room after lights out.

I started doing bedtime again and sat with DS for a bit as he messed about tried to fall asleep. Realised he was chomping his nails.

DS also made comments about being "good" because he was lying quietly after lights out eg "mummy I'm good I was quiet", that sort of thing.

I'm now worried that DS is anxious at bedtime and biting his nails is his way of soothing himself. I don't like the idea of him being anxious, I don't like the idea of him not telling us something is up (or maybe he is - he does mess about a lot) and I dont want him biting his nails.

I'm not able to talk to DH about this quite yet as I'm a bit annoyed with him for changing the bedtime routine in this way as (in my head), DS has now become a nail biter as a result.

Has anyone had to deal with this? Any thoughts on how to stop it?

Hello,
Does your son still bite his nails?
I found out my son was biting his nails at bedtime so i started staying with him. for naptime i was just in the room, for bedtime he wanted to hold my hands.
for 10days i thought we were making progress, his nails started growing healthy and he did not try to put his fingers in his mouth at all, today i left him by himself to fall asleep and both at naptime and night time he bit his nails :( help!
i do not know what to do:(
