19 month old DD still not speaking!

My 19 month old DD still doesn't say anything apart from mama, dada and up.

I think she is really advanced in other areas understands most of what you say to her. She eats using a fork/spoon, can dress/undress herself and is very independent but it really frustrates me that she doesn't speak. Today she had a book she has never seen before and was sitting up "reading it" there was a lion on the page and she pointed to it and growled like we do with her toy lion. She also knows all her animals in her Noaks ark but never attemps to say their names. She does constantly chatter away in her own little language though.

Please tell me I'm just being paranoid, I was an early talker (probably according to my Mum was saying sentences at 12 months and was potty trained too!!!) DP was a late talker according to his mother.

My ds is a late talker. His language 'boom' came just before he was three. I am trying to get the wheels in motion to have him seen by a speech therapist, as his language is muffled at best.

If you are concerned, ask for a referal to a health visiter, but I found two mornings a week with a lot of other children (playschool or playgroup) to really push ds's speech, as they then have the motivation to speak!

HI,My dd is now 2.4 but she didn't start speaking until she was 20 months..(at all,not even mummy daddy ) she has always been quick at other things and although I knew she understood evrtything I said I admit I was worried. AFter she started though she did not stop and now talks alot more than her friends who started earlier and the health visitor said her speech is advanced for her age.So in some ways its good because they are listening and when they are ready they speak.Also soon after starting she leapt onto sentences quite quickly so please don't worry I am sure she is fine..just keep reading and talking to her..you will soon want her to shut up!!

DD 21 months is also not talking (well she has started to do the odd word here and there) ... but she's bright as a button

DS on the other hand was speaking in sentences at 18 months

My DS1 didn't start saying more than Mamma and Dadda and Car until his second birthday. DS2 who is currently 23 months is stringing words together. Just like crawling, walking and everything else, some start sooner than others and will do everything in their own time. Please don't worry!

I forgot to add - something a read a while ago said 'you can't wait for them to start talking in the first two years of their life and then you can't wait for them to shut up for the next 16'! Enjoy the peace and quiet while it lasts!

DS3 is not talking at 2.5 and we have been told it's too early to worry. If she can dress etc then she's just been too busy developing quickly in other areas I expect.

Hi my ds is 19 months and about 2 weeks ago i started a chat about exactley the samr thing my 19 month old only says mum dad and thankyou i had some really good advice off people about not worrying yet as its to early, and blow me about 3 days later when my dh was going to work he said bye bye dad i nearly cried so from one mum to another dont panic.

ds1 was speaking in sentences at 18 months, with his first word at 10 months. At his 2 year check his speech was VERY advanced for his age.

ds2 never babbled, had no words at 18 months, no words at 20 months, 3 words at 22 months, 6 words at 24 months and then started speaking in short sentences at 25 months!

In my opinion you have absolutely nothing to worry about, especially as she understands loads of what you say to her.....

You know what it's like though grandparents asking if she's talking yet!

Don't have peace and quiet as it is she babbles constantly in her own language seems to have her own words for things, quacks and moos at the right bits of Old Macdonald, shouts and chases the cats. One of her favourite things is to stand on DP's sub woofer (I know he goes mad) and rants at you pointing her finger.

But no words, would love to hear her day juice, milk, hungry, tired etc

I'm just reading this thread as my 15 month old ds only says mummum, not even mummy , but you have put my mind at rest. He does understand a lot and he's a little lamb as well.
Laughalot, I just wanted to say how sweet your story was, I would have (nearly) cried too.

My ds 21 mths.
Very few distinguishable words.
He has 4 little friends, from my post-natal group.
They all have 30-40 distinguishable words.
Everyone keeps telling me not to panic - so, I do understand.

Ds says - bye-bye,
mama
dada - yesterday he said daddy.
arf arf = bath.
oohs oohs = shoes.
ooff ooff = woff woof - i.e. dog
e a e o = e,i,e,i,o - old macdonald.

Thats it.
Thats the only things he says.
But he is developing well and can follow instructions - thus my GP says not to worry.

Please don't worry too much.

masiemog glad you like my little story my ds only says mum and dad to not mummy and daddy, i like mummy and daddy when they are younger i want to be mum when he gets older but im sure he will crack it.
