when did your baby stop sleeping in a cot?

my eldest is 22 months and still in his. it's a cotbed size one so there's plenty of room.
he hasn't climbed out of it yet, so i'm reluctant to rock the boat by putting him in a bed, mainly because it's gonna be a whole new world of destruction when he realises he's just on the loose in his bedroom. oh dear.

dd1 was 2.6 when i moved her into a normal single bed, she had never climbed out, i only moved her as i wanted to do her a big girl room for xmas and she was potty trained in day and had started waking in night for a wee so i wanted her to get out herself when she wanted to.
there is no rush unless they are climbing out dangerously.

Ds1 was just over 2 when he went into a toddler bed then a couple months later when he went into a full size single. He was always very happy in his cot so we just left him until we moved.

Ds2 went from our bed straight into full size single at 16months. We didn't bother with a cot. My mum had already bought the 2 new beds so we just put him straight into it when we stopped co-sleeping.

18 months after jumping out of the cot head first.

2 and half (last week!) but he had never climbed out or tried to, we just thought it was time. I wouldnt rush it if he's not toppling out of his cot like some do :)

thanks, that's all good to know. with a bit of luck he'll be in there for a few more months then! he's a rampant climber, i can't believe he hasn't escaped yet (although now i've probably jinxed it).

Both of mine were 3 - dd literally just 3, ds 3 yrs 3months. worked for us. i asked ds just now if he remembers his cot (he is 3y11m now) he said yes. he also said he preferred his cot as it had handles to stop him falling out Grin. nb he has never fallen out - only perhaps one incident in a bed on holiday - never at home Hmm.

oh - and it is a cotbed - so ds is still in the bed bit of it. dd got a proper full size single at 4, but i think ds will be fine for a bit longer.

Much the same as some of the other posts. DD was nearly 2 1/2 and had shown no sign of climbing out of her cot, and still won't get out of bed without us being there. She looked ridiculously big in her cot, but we waited until her new bedroom was ready.

My dd was in a cotbed until we bought her a bed for her 2nd birthday, made it with her and she loves it. Took a few nights for her to get over the excitement that she could actually get out and get her toys, but quite frankly, anything was better that hearing the 'thud' pause pause 'scream' when she climbed then jumped/fell from the top a few times (she's tall...!)

familyfun · 14/06/2012 11:35

even when dd1 went into her bed, she never got out, she would sit up and shout i need a wee or sit up and shout mommy in the morning, so i could probably have left her in the cot even longer.

A week before DS1 turned 3, it was a cotbed so plenty of room and no attempts to climb out! He just asked one day if he could have a big boys bed so we bought a normal single and that was it. It took a good 6 moths before he'd actually get out, would just shout "Mummy I'm awake" repeatedly til I went in....

DS2 is 2.3 and still in a cotbed, we are moving him soon as he's a crap sleeper and has a lot of negative feelins towards his cot so hoping a new start will improve things (please god let it help!)

DeWe · 14/06/2012 11:52

Dd1 and dd2 were about 2yo.
Ds moved to a mattress on the floor at 9 months as he was determinedly climbing out. He moved into a bed at about 18 months (after we moved house-a mattress was very easy to tidy up for viewers!)

KDK12 · 14/06/2012 23:28

thanks everyone! i am now hoping that the longer i can keep him in there, the more likely he is to stay in bed once he moves to a big boy bed. only time will tell what happens though!

Oh and Shock at your boy climbing out at 9 months DeWe! crikey.
