Sitting up

I am flitting between not being worried at all and being worried. DD is 7mo and has pretty much done everything early, rolling over at 10 weeks, calling me mum and pointing at 4 months and so I guess I'm used to her doing things early. So far she's not showing any interest in sitting up, she can sit supported and she has a play ring in which she its up in and she also sits between my legs (with her back to me) and about 50% of the time will actually sit without any support for about 5 seconds until she realises. I suspect she needs the reassurance that someone is there if she falls over but if I put her in sitting position with nothing behind her then she will point blank refuse and will lay herself down. So I know she can do it which is why part of me isn't worried. However DH's mum had spina bifida and (to be fair I know very little about it) am worried a bit that maybe DD has some sort of problem with her back. I feel silly even saying that now because like I said she is sitting on occassion. I was really wondering if there was anyone else out there whoes LO's weren't sitting unsupported at 7mo.

Dd is 6.5 months and not sitting up properly yet. She prefers being on her tummy and pushing up. Is your DD quite active when on the floor?

Sounds pretty normal, don't think there's any concern unless they're still not sitting up at 9 months. My dd sat at 6 months and crawled at 9, friend's baby crawled at 6 months but only really sat unsupported at 8 months. If she can roll and sit for a little while her back is probably ok. I know a couple of babies who could only sit reliably at 8-9 months, nothing wrong with them, just preferred being on their tummies.

Yes she loves being on her tummy and holds her head high and steady and she also loves to roll everywhere! Can you tell that I'm an oversensitive/paranoid first time mum?!! What you've said is very reassuring, I know all babies are different but from what I'd heard most sat up by 7 months, so it's reassuring to know that this is not necessarily the case.

Mine didn't sit up until 8 months. He walked early though - 12 months.
