'friend' may need to fill in DLA form.

Can I ask: what can your 7.5 yr old (boy) do?

  1. Get undressed fully (tops as well)
  2. Dress themselves
  3. Be aware of dangers
  4. Be safe by road
  5. Cut up food
  6. Feed themselves reliably with spoon and fork
  7. Cope with changes to routine
  8. Do you need to settle them in bed and for how long?
  9. Do you help washing their hands
10. Do you wipe their bottoms 11. Can they wash themselves 12. Can they brush own teeth

Thank you for any input. I am grateful Thanks

mamamaiasaura - hope you don't mind me borrowing your clever idea? Great way to find out what is standard for childs age (re stupid forms) when your child may not be standard, iyswim. Smile

  1. Yes, but sometimes needs encouraging.
  2. Yes
  3. Yes, but wouldn't rely on it.
  4. Mostly, but again, wouldn't rely on it.
  5. Yes, but can't be bothered a lot of the time
  6. Yes
  7. Not easily.
  8. Yes. Depending on his mood, anything from a few minutes to an hour
  9. Supervise rather than help, I would say
10. No. He does ask, but I don't help him anymore. 11. He probably can, but doesn't. He would rather stay smelly Hmm. We have to forcibly wash him occasionally. 12. Yes, but with supervision.

You're looking for what NT children can do as a baseline?

OK, DD is now 9 but at 7.5 I think was basically a yes to all those things listed.

For #8 - I would tuck her in and have a little chat, turn out light, kiss goodnight (taking maybe 5mins), and she would normally go to sleep fine by herself, but maybe once every week or two would come back down and need resettling.

Re #10 - she would wipe herself, but not always with 100 per cent success, judging by the state of the knickers in the laundry basket.

#11 - yes, would wash herself in bath, but I washed her hair (still do at age 9 - it's very long and curly).

tunafortea · 16/05/2012 22:59

This is really helpful.

Mine are:
No: 1-7: NO.
No 8: YES. up to 3.5 hours.
No 9-10 YES
No 11-12 NO
So, clearly diff from standard then.

Thanks, exexpat and Faverolles.

Any more?

My DS is 7.8 with very slight issues reported in the past WRT fine motor skills, so...

  1. Get undressed fully (tops as well) YES
  2. Dress themselves YES (but has only just mastered socks)
  3. Be aware of dangers MOSTLY
  4. Be safe by road MOSTLY
  5. Cut up food A BIT
  6. Feed themselves reliably with spoon and fork YES (but prefers to use fingers)
  7. Cope with changes to routine (N/A routine doesn't really happen in our house)
  8. Do you need to settle them in bed and for how long? (NOT REALLY - sometimes he will go to sleep, sometimes we have story and a song, sometimes I am up and down the stairs a few times)
  9. Do you help washing their hands SOMETIMES
10. Do you wipe their bottoms NO 11. Can they wash themselves YES can shower by himself and is unsupervised in bath, though I sometimes have at his face with a wet flannel if he's particularly enjoyed his tea 12. Can they brush own teeth YES though I still sometimes supervise

Hope this helps

PrematurelyAirconditioned · 16/05/2012 23:22

DS (7.8 yrs) can do all of these though the cutlery and bum wiping is not great. He has HFA.

YourFanjoIsNotAHandbag · 16/05/2012 23:30

Ds2 is nearly 8
Can do all the things from 1-8
He puts on his pjs, I take him upstairs, we have a kiss and cuddle and he is asleep in 5 minutes.
I don't help him wash his hands, he would never let me wipe his bottom and he showers, washes hair, brushes teeth by himself every morning.

radiolater · 16/05/2012 23:36

DS is 7.2

  1. Get undressed fully (tops as well) YES
  2. Dress themselves YES
  3. Be aware of dangers YES, MOSTLY
  4. Be safe by road AGAIN YES MOSTLY, CYCLES OUTSIDE IN OUR CLOSE, STOPS AND STANDS BY KERB IF CAR COMING
  5. Cut up food YES
  6. Feed themselves reliably with spoon and fork YES
  7. Cope with changes to routine YES
  8. Do you need to settle them in bed and for how long? HE NEVER WANTS TO GO TO BED BUT DOES SETTLE ONCE THERE
  9. Do you help washing their hands NO
10. Do you wipe their bottoms NO 11. Can they wash themselves I WASH HIS HAIR THEN LEAVE HIM TO IT- HE MAKES A LOT OF MESS BUT GETS OUT BATH WHEN HE'S HAD ENOUGH, DRYS HIMSELF AND PUTS PJS ON 12. Can they brush own teeth YES, TAKES HIM A LONG TIME - HE LIKES TO FEEL HIS TEETH SQUEAK CLEAN
molschambers · 16/05/2012 23:36

DD is 7 in a few weeks.

She would quite happily do all of the things on your list. I don't allow her to cross the road by herself yet but thinking about it now I think she would manage to do so safely if need be.

tunafortea · 17/05/2012 14:20

Thank you. Thanks
