Lip licking habit in 3yo - how can I help him stop?

My 3yo DS has developed a bad lip licking habit, resulting in horrid painful looking chapped skin all around his mouth. We try and remind him not to whenever we see him doing it, but it's one of those automatic things that he doesn't notice himself doing so it's hard to catch him all the time. He also seems to think we are telling him off, which of course we are not but I can see why he would think so.

It makes me sad seeing his lovely little face all chapped up :( Anyone got any good tips for helping him break the habit? I slather his face in E45 every night, which helps overnight, but as soon as he starts licking again the redness reappears.

I think trying to help him stop will probably just make him do it more.

If you ignore it he will stop in the end anyway. Keep using E45 and also Vaseline which sticks around a bit longer.

It probably bothers you far more than it does him.
