Ds is 10 months old and is unhappy unless he's with me, preferably sat on me or leaning against me but quite often he whinges even if he's sat with me. He screams if I have to put him down at all, even if DP is holding him.

I'm guessing this is a phase but how can we help him get over it? It's exhausting for me and upsetting for DP that DS screams everytime he tries to comfort him.

I had one of those... It was exhausting. She just grew out of it in her own time, she is still super cuddly especially when in new places but is generally quite happy to toddle off. She's 2.2 now, she started getting less clingy about 18 months. I just went with it, let her cuddle whenever needed, as she got older I would cuddle at her level rather than pick her up.

You can't help him get over it except by going along with it - it's separation anxiety and is absolutely age-appropriate. It is exhausting but it's a developmental milestone and a good sign! Letting him feel that you're impatient will only prolong his anxiety, unfortunately. It'll be fine in a few months.

my DS1 was like this and it started to get better just before he turned 3.
ive tried everything but nothing worked. he just became more independent on his own time.
