DS (13 months) suddenly shy

He's going through a very clingy phase, but his reactions to others is different now, even compared to previous clingy phases.

He seems initially shy if visitors he knows very well, and when children approach him in the park he just freezes and avoids eye contact. It's as though he's tying to make himself invisible!

He also seems newly self-conscious; for example, he seems embarrassed and suddenly stops if he notices strangers watching him dance.

All this is so unlike how he has been up until recently. Is he losing confidence? What can I do to help him? Or should I just let it pass?

No, he's just becoming aware of himself as an individual - babies don't know they're separate from you at first and it gradually dawns on them during their second year that they are one person and other people are other people. He'll be fine when he gets used to it!

Thanks for the reassurance. It's just so sudden and such a shock to see him like this - I hate the thought that he feels frightened.
